THE FIRST HOUR

This is why I leave camp with my groups very early in the mornings….

This light lasts about 20-30mins each day…and if you’re on safari for a week, that’s 7 chances to find something epic.

Join me for a photographic safari that prioritises these special times.

THINGS ARE LOOKING UP

Getting a shot like this requires careful exposure compensation (to keep the colour in the background), precise focusing (to get a sharp subject even though there’s little to help the AF system) and management of the ISO to keep the shutter speed up in the failing light.

If you’d like to be part of a small group trip where we’d set up and wait for moments like this, please get in touch. A few spaces remain for trips in 2026.

CUB PATROL

Who wants to go to Lower Zambezi with me?

Lower Zambezi’s lion population is growing steadily. For a long time, lionesses seemed not to get pregnant or the very small prides meant cubs didn’t survive. But last year, youngsters were thriving and we hope to see further growth when we start safari season 2025!

DESTINATIONS: Edward Selfe Photo Safaris offers scheduled and custom photographic safaris throughout East and Southern Africa. Based in the wildlife rich South Luangwa in Zambia — where I have lived for 15 years — we offer safaris that blend outstanding nature guiding, tailored photographic tuition and a memorable wildlife experience. With safaris in Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, Botswana, Tanzania and Zimbabwe, you and your small group (usually just 4 guests) can expect a first class experience. Whether you would like to track leopard in the riverine forests of South Luangwa; or trek with chimps in Kibale Forest; or scan for lions swimming the channels of the Busanga Plains; or photograph the elephants among the winterthorn trees of Lower Zambezi, I will start early, work hard and use my years of experience in the bush to offer the best possible trip.

Conservation South Luangwa NEEDS YOUR HELP!

"As you will already be aware, last month the new United States Presidential Administration issued an Executive Order that paused all US foreign assistance for 90 days. The order mandates a reassessment of programmatic efficiencies as part of a broader policy direction to reduce foreign aid. Unfortunately, this momentum affects many conservation organizations including NGOs like CSL, who have a long history and successful partnership with United States Federal Agencies. Together these partnerships have supported vital work in biodiversity conservation, human wildlife conflict mitigation and support to people living with wildlife."

PLEASE READ THIS NEWSLETTER AND SUPPORT COMMUNITIES AND WILDLIFE IN THE LUANGWA

I am Secretary of the Board of CSL and I'm proud & impressed to see the way the senior team is leading the organisation through this shockwave, but they'll need help from all sides if they are to maintain their essential work. Thank you.

FLUFFTAIL

Just before departing Zambia for UK annual leave, I heard the distinctive sound of a Buff-spotted Flufftail calling behind our house at night.

I went to look the next morning and found the male bird wandering around in the bottom of a large open thicket. He strolled towards me, passed by at a range of 5m and dissolved into the grass.

These birds are highly skulky, preferring to stay hidden whenever possible so it was a huge thrill to see it. I returned in the evening and the following morning with my camera…and this obscured image of the female was the best I managed!!

MARSH

Celebrating some western palearctic wildlife while we visit family in England. Always a pleasure to see Marsh T**s which are widespread, but never common, in the UK.

These birds were coming to a feeder in Somerset.

SCOUT

Even in the middle of the day, when predator activity is at its lowest, herbivore prey species take care to keep a look out.

In Botswana’s Okavango Delta, it’s most likely cheetah which will be a threat in the daylight hours, and zebra herds operate a sub-conscious “nodding-donkey” process where one of the herd has their head up - albeit chewing at the same time - while the rest crop grass.

This allows opportunities to create pretty images of multiple animals banked behind each other, switching focus point as different individuals lift their heads. The tail flick is a helpful bonus!

STOP MOTION

Using a slow shutter speed, and keeping the camera very still, I created a sharp image of this buffalo cow as the rest of the herd passed steadily behind.

Shot at 0.5sec, ISO 100, f6.3 in Okavango Delta at Splash Camp.

FRINGE

The light in Botswana in early December 2024 was spectacular. It was hot as Hades — because the rains had come late — but the sightings were excellent as a result.

On this particular afternoon, we spent time with more than 800 zebras on the floodplain around Splash Camp

As the sun dipped, we shot straight towards the sun, creating great fringe effects.

PINK GOSHAWK

While watching a huge bull elephant - who was very calm in our presence - I spotted movement in a tuft of grass nearby. A Pale Chanting Goshawk was grappling with a snake.

As is customary with Botswana’s wildlife, it paid little attention to us, but quickly flew to a low perch when its mate approached. As the mate followed, it departed to a thorny tree nearby and the mate landed on the same perch, in search of scraps.

We were able to approach to within 8 meters, and manoeuvre round to place the sun behind the bird as it dipped towards the horizon. Superb, dazzling experience with
