Add light rail? Add light rail.
"This project is going to get built. We're taking some time to figure it out, but it's going to get done."
The misinformation campaign by the anti-light rail crowd has had a huge effect on the latest poll results. If you're in Virginia Beach, please get out and VOTE!
Virginia Beach voters are evenly divided on light rail, according to a new poll: 49 percent no, 48 percent yes.

With tracks built into local streets, light-rail construction is particularly disruptive. But residents and businesses hope they will eventually profit.

Welcome to "The Tide Diaries":

This page documents our travels on Norfolk's light rail system called "The Tide"
After the game with my nephew last night I was getting my bike at Harbor Park station (no bike racks at the stadium) and noticing the lack of riders on the Tide :)
BLECHHHHHH tunnel traffic... tired of tunnel traffic and feel the same way I do? I don't always go through the tunnels but the tunnels still impact me too.
WE NEED THE TIDE TO BE EXTENDED TO THE PENINSULA CITIES
Visit the new Slover library for wonderful events! Take the Tide to Macarthur Sq.
Go to a concert at Chrysler Hall or see a play at the beautiful Roper Theater from the Monticello station!
Newport News residence: effective with the July service change, Route 106 and 107 will return to running every 30 minutes on the Combined Warwick Blvd. Corridor like it used to be. Details will arrive as it comes closer to the change. The reason it will not happen until July it's because that is when the new fiscal year begins.

Construction is set to begin in 2016, with an opening date of 2018. The facility will be able to accommodate 4 Amtrak trains a day, and include a transfer area for HRT buses, along with a Greyhound bus station. It has also been identified as a future light rail station.
Newport News has identified potential sites for a train storage and servicing area to complement a proposed transportation hub off Bland Boulevard.

Light rail may finally become reality for Chesapeake - via Dave Mitchell

Last night I was at a meeting with the new chief at VDRPT, Jennifer Mitchell.
They are currently in discussion with the freight rail carriers regarding scheduling the next Amtrak train from Norfolk.
It looks like the original plan to fund a high speed rail link between DC & Newport News (a proposal which was recently shoved aside in favor of a Norfolk-DC link) might be partially restored under a new high speed rail proposal that bypasses the Richmond suburbs to the southeast through Charles City County.
This Peninsula link would run from the town of Roxbury in Charles City County (which sits on the current Amtrak/CSX line) to the town of Toano just north of Williamsburg. It would likely be the first phase of a high speed rail link between Richmond & Newport News as city planners in Newport News continue to work towards a new Amtrak station that will be designed to accommodate high speed rail.
A proposed high speed rail route from Norfolk to Washington D.C. might include a spur linking it to the peninsula by way of James City County.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Efforts to bring The Tide across the harbor have finally gotten the attention of our state legislature. The best advice we can give is to call/email/write to your House delegates and URGE THEM to pursue this study!
RICHMOND — Study money included in the Virginia Senate's budget proposal would fund a hard look at transit options up and down the Peninsula, and potentially set the stage for a rail line crossing from the Peninsula into Norfolk .
Reminder for FRIDAY:
Hampton Roads Transit
--------
* NO BUS SERVICE
* Light Rail and Ferry on REGULAR schedule
GoWATA - Williamsburg Area Transit Authority
--------
* Buses are on a REGULAR schedule, however expect detours and delays as conditions warrant
* THERE WILL BE NO CONNECTIONS WITH HRT AT LEE HALL, NOR WILL THERE BE ROUTE 121 SERVICE TO THE TRAIN STATION

Do you agree or disagree that bringing light rail to the Peninsula would be just as costly, if not more expensive? Discuss.
Project leaders say the route would draw more commuters and tourists than two other options, but it would be more costly and disrupt twice as many homeowners and businesses.
Study aims to find out whether or not light rail increases physical activity: http://mobile.masstransitmag.com/news/11286688/study-aims-to-find-physical-activity-impact-of-light-rail
More money is on the way for transit projects in Hampton Roads.
Transportation bills approved by the 2013 General Assembly not only boost transit and rail project funding, they require a new method for figuring out how much money states will provide to transit systems, and how much localities must add to the pot.
