Köprülü Mehmed Pasha, the 80 year old Ottoman Grand Vizier:

Köprülü Mehmed Pasha was the Grand Vizier of the Ottoman Empire from 1656-1661. Despite his age, he was selected to fill the office of Grand Vizier due to his neutrality and merit in an era which was dominated by powerful factions. Appointed at the age of 80, his designation as Grand Vizier initiated the Köprülü era, a period in which the Ottoman Empire's politics were frequently dominated by a series of Grand Viziers from the Köprülü family and their protégés.

Köprülü Mehmed Pasha was able to resolve internal political and social unrest within the domains of the Ottoman Empire. He successfully managed to contain and defeat the Abaza Mehmed Pasha revolt in Anatolia and also campaigned personally during the Crete campaign as well as in Transylvania where he reinstated order and pushed the Ottomans closer to the Austrian border. According to author Caroline Finkel, he was a charitable benefactor. He had mosques, schools, bakeries, mills, and shops built across Ottoman territories in Europe as well as in the Ottoman capital of Istanbul. His charitable work also reached his native homeland, Albania. While serving the Ottoman state in Syria, his administrative skills prompted more efficient security measures for those travelling to perform pilgrimage towards the holy lands, protecting pilgrims from raids and insufficient supplies.

He held such esteem in the eyes of the young Sultan Mehmed IV, that the Sultan could not tolerate a single word against his Grand Vizier. When Abaza Mehmed Pasha began his anti-Köprülü revolt in the heartland of Anatolia due to refusing to join Köprülü Mehmed Pasha's campaign towards Transylvania. He demanded that the Sultan remove Köprülü Mehmed Pasha from office and promptly rebelled against the state with the soldiers under his command.

The Sultan is recorded to have stated: "I greatly regret having to say that these men are not my servants. I have already ordered them to abandon their useless notions and come before me. What sort of Muslims are they who continue to disobey orders? God willing, I will punish them all."

On his deathbed, Köprülü Mehmed Pasha requested that the Sultan avoid falling into the trap of appointing wealthy ministers to important offices, to keep the treasury full, and always motivate and keep the army busy at the fronts. Köprülü Mehmed Pasha is credited as rejuvenating the spirit of the Ottoman army, and restoring the Ottoman Empire's reputation for military prowess.
