⛰️Mount Rose Swanson⛰️

Armstrong Spallumcheen’s well known mountain hike, with a beautiful view over the valley of Armstrong and Spallumcheen.
The mountain is named after Rose Swanson, the daughter of famous overlanders settlers in Catherine & Augustus Schubert, who settled in Armstrong in 1879.

Here’s some more history on Mount. Rose Swanson:

Catherine O’Hare Shubert was born near Rathfriland County Down, Ireland in 1835. She moved to America in 1850 at the age of 15 and married Augustus Schubert in 1856. The couple moved to Fort Garry, near Winnipeg, in 1860, and then two years later, joined the Overlanders and travelled to the gold fields in BC. The trip took 4 months. Their fourth child, a girl, was the first white baby born in the interior of BC. She was born in Kamloops only hours after arriving l. She was named Rose after the rose hips that kept the family from starvation on the last leg of the their trip. The family settled in Armstrong in 1879. Rose went on to marry twice, first to Thomas Le Duc and later to Henry Swanson.

A cairn stands in Memorial Park in honour of Catherine O’Hare Schubert who was the first European woman to enter from the East. In July 2015, an agreement was signed to solidify a sister city relationship between the city of Armstrong and Rathfriland, having Catherine O’Hare Schubert as a common bond.

Now you know some of the history of Armstrong’s mountain hike!

Did already know this or is it new information to you?

This community is POWERFUL.
One of the first comments we get from around-the-world visitors who explore our area is “Everyone is so nice and welcoming!” Everyone is amazed at how friendly everyone is and the essence of community that we have. Our community is so good at helping when someone is in need. We empower each other constantly with support, encouragement, and a helping hand, and it is noticed by visitors who tour our town.
Here’s a reminder that your kindness is seen, and makes a difference.
