A large contingent, they gather today
At the war cemetery so far away
To honour the fallen, the brave and the true
Who gave their all, for me and for you
Among them is Taina Ngarimu, with a heavy heart
Searching for his uncle, never to depart
Umuariki Te Kani, a hero in his own right
Lies in a distant land, far from sight
But Taina is here, to pay his respects
To a loved one who gave his all, with no regrets
He ponders on the loss of innocent lives
And the sacrifice of loved ones, who survive
Rest in love, dear loved one, he whispers today
I will carry your memories back home, I say
I will tell of the great warrior, and your comrades too
For your sacrifice, we are forever grateful to you
The price paid by those left behind, we can never repay
But on this day, we honour you in every way
Your legacy lives on, in our hearts and minds
For the fallen, we will always remember and find
So Taina leaves, with a heavy heart
But with memories and love, never to depart

The Maori Battalion's anthem, it is said
A song that echoes with pride and sorrow
For those who fought for a better tomorrow
The sound of the old people, so strong and true
Reminds us of those who fought through and through
They stood tall in the face of danger and fear
For the love of their country, their whanau so dear
Look down upon us, dear Lord above
As we honour those who served with love
We remember the fallen, the brave and the true
For their sacrifice, we are forever in awe of you
The sons, the fathers, the grandfathers too
They fought for our freedom, for me and for you
Their bravery and courage, we cannot forget
For the Maori Battalion, we owe them a debt

On this day in 2023, we pause to remember
The brave men and women who fought with valour
For the freedom we now cherish so dear
We honour their sacrifice, so sincere
ANZAC Day, a solemn occasion
To honour the fallen with great admiration
Their courage and bravery, we cannot deny
As we pay tribute to them with tears in our eye
They fought in lands so far away
In trenches deep, day after day
To secure our future, they gave their all
Their sacrifice, we must never let fall
In foreign soil, they found their rest
Their memories, we hold to our chest
To the wives and children, we send our love
For their sacrifice, we are forever in awe
As years go by, their memories remain

He is a legend❤️🇮🇹
Sir Bom initially turned down the honour because of the Crown's treatment of Māori who returned from war.
