Cycling East Renfrewshire Cycling East Renfrewshire promotes and encourages sustainable transport in East Renfrewshire, identifying cycle routes for development or signing.

Sustrans - sustainable transport - was established as a national organisation in the 1990s. Its initial aim was to create, in association with local authorities, a system of long distance cycle routes around the country - the National Cycle Network [NCN]. Local Sustrans groups of volunteers were established to look after these routes. More recently the focus of activity has shifted to include cycl

ing opportunities within and around city and town areas - cycle to work and cycle to school. Sustrans now works with both central and local government. In Scotland it receives a block grant for a 'Community Links’ programme. Councils then bid to Sustrans for funding for projects in their area. Cycling East Renfrewshire is run by the East Renfrewshire Sustrans Volunteers. Our group is fairly new - now in its third year. There are no NCN routes within the council area and little in the way of signposted and recommended cycle routes. ER Council is currently drawing up a Active Travel Strategy which focuses on cycling Our Sustrans group is contributing to this by exploring possible routes for development and / or signing both within East Ren and north into Glasgow. We also plan to run a series of guided cycle rides in East Renfrewshire on Saturday mornings throughout the year.

Some bad news unfortunately, Keith Fergus has passed away from cancer.

Keith had many interests he was passionate about, but in East Renfrewshire he was the main driver behind the Bikeability program, leading East Renfrewshire Council to be the first local authority in Scotland to have every primary school delivering Bikeability courses to their pupils.

I'd tell the kids "Wait till Keith comes, he won't let you get away with that", but they always loved his visits, where he'd "shake things up a bit".

He also published many walking guides - including the local walking routes on the ERC website.

A relentless champion of the outdoors and active travel, he's a great loss to our community and will be sadly missed.

Keith Fergus began working for Cycling UK in February 2019 as the cycling instructor for the Inverclyde Bothy. Keith was one of the most skilled and talented cycling instructors in Scotland so to have his expertise as part of the team was something Cycling UK will be eternally grateful for. Keith wo...

This local petition needs a wee boost to get over 1000 signatures...it would be great if we can show ERC there is demand for decent active travel infrastructure around schools. Getting kids in the habit of getting around by bike has to be a great start, good for the local environment and long term health.

ERC are having a consultation on improvements to the cycling infrastructure on the stretch of Ayr Rd above Mearns Cross, which would improve access for the new housing developments. It improves an impressive "Dutch style" roundabout, which would be good for people to see how they work.

Let them know what you think - you can also agree with other submissions you like.
