I saw a girl by herself on the mountains.. staring into the horizon. And I thought to myself, “Looks like she needs a friend!” She then got up to leave and as she turned around, I realised… she was my best friend.

Truth be told, she did need a friend. But I was too busy seeking out strangers to help, thus ignoring my own needs and that of my family and friends who probably needed me too.

We all do things and behave in a certain way to fulfil a need or to fill a void. And on that quest to discover what that need or void was I constantly trying to fill and to understand myself better .. I began to ask myself “WHY??”

Are we Raising People Pleasers?

Have you been told that you are “good” when you did something your parents said without questioning them?
Suddenly it’s becoming a child’s job to ensure they don’t upset, disappoint or let down their parents or others around them. It feels as though they are responsible for how people around them react and feel. And if you think about.. no child has ever gotten more praise than for when they were being selfless and putting others before their own needs.

Teaching kids to love, respect, understand and appreciate others is important but teaching them where to draw the line is equally if not more important. Have you ever found yourself doing something you didn’t want to do coz you felt a loved one would be upset if you didn’t? Well that stems from a childhood mental block to please others and is actually quite common in a lot of adults.

So why do adults people please? One thought may be - “If I give up my boundaries, then I’m more likely to be loved and accepted” or “If I do so, I can avoid any sort of conflict” So what happens is that, the adult mind forms this sub-conscience association that tells you that by giving up what you need and by doing what others expect of you, walking on egg shells, basically being ”good”, you are more likely to be safe, survive and get your needs met. The mind actually goes through this interesting programming that tells you - “By giving up your sense of self, positive things will happen”

While this may have been something that worked for you as a child.. as an adult this will play an entirely different role. If we can’t show up for ourselves and carve out time for our own needs, then we’re less likely to get the job we want, less likely to go after the dreams we have, less likely to have our needs met if we don’t know what our needs are or know how to express them. And this will end up leaving us dissatisfied, frustrated, disconnected, emotionally drained and often even burned out.

𝐇𝐚𝐯𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐃𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐏𝐮𝐫𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞

So many times you come across a lot of quotes, books and sayings about setting goals, being content, finding the meaning of life, following your passion etc. Sometimes I find all of it so overwhelming and even a bit confusing, like… I need to work hard to follow my passion to make my passion my career but also life is short so I need to make time for my loved ones and hobbies and somehow always try to live in the moment and be content where I am and not believe happiness can only be attained by achieving my next goal 🥵🥵🥵

Confusing right?

So why not find a purpose every single day rather than for life as a whole. This is a very broad statement I’m aware but finding meaning in everything you do, every single day is just a simpler way of getting through each day. We all feel overwhelmed with things - peer pressure, productivity pressure, family supporting pressure, anxiety, stress.. but let me tell you.. you’re not alone in this. Instead of building up the problems inside your head, why not break it down?

Got a lot of things to do? Write it down and prioritise. At the end of the day focus on how much you got done rather than what’s left coz your purpose was to get the ball rolling and not just stress about how much work you got to do.

Feeling burnt out at your current job? Do yourself a favour and take a break. You’d rather come back feeling rejuvenated and willing to work, than unhappy and miserable for days on end. Worst case, still don’t want to go back? Then quit and find a less demanding and more fulfilling job. Having a healthy mind and body is way better than earning a lot having sacrificed your health and well being.

Don’t let however anyone else’s life is going or what other people may say or do, trick you into believing that you’re not doing well enough nor going fast enough. Go at your own pace! The key to progress is having the courage to start before you’re ready and trusting yourself to figure it out along the way. Perfectionism slows down progress but procrastination kills it.

People Always Leave

So I recently got to thinking about people leaving and how it affects the ones left behind. People leaving could be due to multiple reasons - for a better future, friendship falling apart/break up or the most painful of all - death.

As a young girl, I remember watching One Tree Hill where Peyton draws a red signal stating “People Always Leave” and for some reason that has stuck with me. People do always leave in some way or the other but how we choose to deal with it, is what changes our outlook of life.

Time is a limited resource. Once spent, it’s gone forever. We can never get time back but we can be intentional with the time we have. We can protect our precious time by saving it for the activities and people that give us most joy. It’s all too easy to forget how important our family is to us. We get busy with our day to day lives but why not get busy with the people who matter most to us? Your family is priceless and while we can’t pick and choose them, we can always pick our friends and make them part of our families.

So pick up the phone and call your loved ones far away and tell them you miss them. Don’t let the break ups and broken friendships ruin your inner peace - wish them well and let them go! And as for the living… love them hard coz we don’t know if we’ll see a tomorrow and we don’t want to have any regrets or unfinished business.

Absolutely loved the cocktails at 🥂

We arrived there with every intent to try out different cocktails and the guys over there were so helpful in ensuring our taste buds were craving more 🤤
