One of the most common questions we get is, “What should I pack for my trip to Sitka?”

It’s a great question, since Sitka has a cool maritime climate with frequent rain and mild temperatures year-round. Summers are cool, with highs in the 60s (°F), and winters are mild, rarely dropping below freezing. Rain is typical, but there are also many clear days that showcase the stunning landscapes.

To make the most of your visit, packing the right essentials is key. Here’s your ultimate guide on what to pack per season when visiting Sitka: visitsitka.org/blog/what-to-pack-for-your-trip-to-sitka

Do you know the interesting history of the Alaska State Flag?

Benny Benson, a 13-year-old native Alaskan orphan of Aleut-Russian descent, crafted the Alaska state flag's design in 1927. His inspiration drew from the celestial beauty of Alaska's night sky, specifically the Big Dipper constellation and the guiding light of the North Star.

This emblematic design won a contest for the Alaska Territory's flag, earning Benny Benson a prize of $1,000 and a watch. Later, in 1959, upon Alaska's admission as the 49th state of the United States, Benson's creation became the official state flag, embodying the state's identity and its place as the northernmost frontier of the nation!

Check out Sitka's newest addition, the Sheet’ka Treetop Adventures Park!

TREETOP ADVENTURE – Sitkan Sharyn Ferrick works her way around one of the aerial paths at the newly opened Sheet’ka Treetop Adventures park at 4775 Halibut Point Road Tuesday. Watching from a bench in background is Erik Marter, of Northwest Adventures and Synergo, who helped set up the park. Shee Atika Inc., which owns the attraction, leases the land near the Sitka Sound Cruise Terminal from the city. The Native corporation hosted Tuesday’s grand opening and lunch. This year a very special violin, commissioned by Sitka locals and built from pieces of wood collected from various significant locations across Sitka, will be gifted to the Sitka Music Festival!

Visit Sitka

Sitka is an island community boldly living between the mountains and sea, where the arts flourish and an ancient native culture still thrives. Surrounded by rainforest, we share our home with brown bears, bald eagles and all five species of Pacific salmon. In Sitka, we are deeply connected to the natural world around us. It informs our culture and inspires our art.

This is Sitka. The place where wilderness and culture collide.
