An interesting relic of my travels. When I first came to tour Europe and Germany on a motorcycle there was ‘the east’ and ‘the west.’ Even after unification, many people called the part “East Germany.” It is amazing to think that this has been over 30 years now!

An interesting relic of my travels. When I first came to tour Europe and Germany on a motorcycle there was ‘the east’ and ‘the west.’ Even after unification, many people called the part “East Germany.” It is amazing to think that this has been over 30 years now!

Moving on MORE ferries and endless additional tunnels, I entered Denmark, Germany, and then Netherlands. The simplicity of border crossing has changed dramatically. In my first motorcycle trip to Europe, I remember entering The Netherlands — the furthest north of my travels. It was a very large complex; I had to produce motorcycle title and insurance, passport, and change traveler’s checks at the border. Now, it is this simple — a backroad, country road, with no lines painted on the road, with a non-nonsense sign — no guards, no passports, no stamps, no delays…not even a yield or stop sign and I am in!

I JUST GOT OUT OF A NIGHT IN JAIL IN HELSINKI! If staying in a container was not enough, then the next night I stayed in a former prison. Katajanokka is former prison in downtown Helsinki that has been transformed to a rather nice hotel.
