PublicMarkets.com Cuisine. Culture. Community. We're celebrating the public markets of the world! Check out our new si PublicMarkets.com is a very photo-centric website.

Our mission is simple: the promotion and celebration of the great public marketplaces of the world. PublicMarkets.com was started by a few photographers and writers who love food and travel. We found ourselves gravitating to the markets around the world, shooting photos and recording our experiences, and realized that our enthusiasm was common to many. So we decided to create a place where we can

share this passion with others, and hopefully stimulate the sharing of your own market experiences. These are visually stunning places, teeming with colorful sights and buzzing with activity, animated by a special kind of commerce that’s familiar to cultures around the world: the business of food. In an amazingly diverse world, a beautifully displayed harvest in the market evokes a universal admiration, and language barriers melt away with smiles of appreciation. Although we encourage feedback and comments about the markets, we ourselves don’t review or rate these places to suggest that some are better than others. As we’ve mentioned
elsewhere on this site, public markets are often shaped by the communities they serve and the products, the décor, even the prices reflect the local environment and culture. We might each have our favorites or prefer one to another, but we appreciate them all.

The conference has begun! But before it started we made our way to the Central Market of Valencia, and it is spectacular! The iron, glass and ceramic domes are – in a word – stunning. This market is considered one of the oldest European markets still running. We found an abundance of food vendors, a few souvenir shops and restaurants as well.

As we wait for the conference to begin, we hopped over to Lisbon to check out Mercado Ribeira. On one side you have a hip urban food court with top chefs serving until the wee hours. On the other side you have a traditional early morning market. One side opens when the other side closes. While the market building is more than a century old, this dining/shopping concept is less than a year old. Looks like it's thriving!

DAY TWO: La Boqueria continues to be a great place for people watching and gawking at the amazing selection of food so artfully displayed.

Did you know Barcelona has over 40 public markets which receive an average of 68 million visitors a year? They are a vital part of Barcelona's economy and identity.

We made it to Barcelona! Our first stop was at Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria (“La Boqueria”), a city market located next to La Rambla pedestrian mall. Dating back to 1217, La Boqueria is as colorful as it is lively. WARNING: these photos may induce hunger pains.

We’ll have more photos from our trip as we await the International Public Market Conference. Check back soon!

Before the industrial age, people shopped for food in their local areas – often in beautiful covered halls and markets. Jonathan Glancey describes the best.
