Spring in Texas!
One of my favorite springtime activities is to drive the flower-lined roads in the Texas Hill Country. It’s a right of passage if you lived in Texas for any length of time. In fact, the Texas Department of Transportation has a wildflower hotline for wildflower information during peak blooming season. Some may counter that it’s a waste of tax-payer dollars to provide such a state funded line, but I maintain that it’s always good to be able to enjoy the beauty of God’s creativity! And really, what other state would be audacious enough to provide an information hotline for flowers?
Spring in Texas is one of those seasons where the Texas heat wanes and northern breezes create a climate more familiar to South Californian’s than Texans. It’s the two weeks out of the year where you want to dine al fresco and choose a light sweater for evenings out on the Texas town. It wouldn't be Spring in Texas without the major flower covered hills along the Texas Highways and Interstates system being bombarded with Texans looking to get the famous “Family in the Bluebonnet’s” picture. I’ve seen dogs, cats, children, grandparents, and even a horse or two posed in the luxurious cobalt plumed lupines. These pictures wind up on fireplace mantels and Texas themed Christmas photos everywhere.
I am thankful that much of my childhood memories come from a place that has so much beauty and pride — a land that isn't afraid to be proud of its’ past, that has remained determinedly optimistic on its’ future, and that is ever so joyful that there really isn't any other place in the world that IS Texas!
