This juvenile brown bear crossed the trail we were hiking while on an Alaska Outdoors tour a few years back. It was with mom and a sibling. They were about 50 ft. in front of us. This bear was looking back to the family when the photo was taken. At no point did we feel threatened, just in awe. They went on their way and we went on ours.

Alaska is so awesome.

Thinking about taking a trip this summer? How about a camping trip in Alaska to relax and connect with nature. Falling asleep to the sound of a waterfall should do the trick. We'll take great care of you!

Moose are the largest member of the deer family and Alaska moose are the largest of all moose subspecies.

The flap of skin growing under their jaw is called a Dewlap. Its function is a mystery.

We see moose on just about every trip we take and it’s always a treat. This photo was taken on an Alaska Outdoors tour.

The Sea Otter is the largest member of the Weasel family. About 90 percent of the world’s sea otters live in coastal Alaska.

Once hunted to near extinction, they are now protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act. All of our tours include the opportunity to observe these cute and fascinating creatures.

This photo was taken on an Alaska Outdoors tour.

Did you know that Humpback whales do not feed for about ½ the year? Humpbacks migrate to warm waters in the winter to bare their young and do not feed during this time. Each summer, a large population returns to Alaska to fatten up along the cold, nutrient rich coastal waters. During this time, they are known to feed up to 22 hours a day.

We have the opportunity to observe these amazing creatures on our tours. In this photo, taken on one of our trips last summer, about 10 humpbacks are engaged in a cooperative feeding method called Bubble-net feeding. Always an impressive sight to witness!

Alaska is world renowned for its vast landscape and abundant wildlife. Alaska also has a fascinating history. Gold was first discovered by non natives in 1880 and played a significant roll in the early European settlement in Alaska. Hardy individuals braved intense hardship in search of adventure.

We have the opportunity to experience the remnants of these early mining activities on our trips. While visiting these locations you can almost feel the pain, struggle, joy, and laughter of these long past days.

We often get asked: What's on the menu? Well, one of our signature camp meals is wild caught Alaska Salmon, fresh locally grown organic vegetables, wild rice, garden salad, and yummy fresh bread. Don't eat salmon, no problem- we'll make something special for you too.

We regularly get to see Porcupines on our trips. They're actually kind of cute as long as you don't try to pet them. Last summer one came on our property while we were busy prepping our next round of trips. Our mascot (Jasper dog) was a little too curious. It took us about an hour to get them all out and a follow up to the vet the next day. He ended up being just fine, if not a little sore for a few days. I'd like to think he learned his lesson, but not too sure. 😀

The first official recording of -60 degrees F in Alaska this winter occurred in Chicken on Jan, 5th.

The lowest temperature ever recorded in the United States was -80 degrees Fahrenheit (-62 degrees Celsius) on January 23, 1971 at Prospect Creek Camp, Alaska located near the Arctic Circle

A bit of trivia: How did Chicken get its name?

Numerous gold miners settled the region during the late nineteenth century, and a post office was built by 1902. The post office required a community name; therefore, the town decided to name the region after a local grouse known as Ptarmigan which was quite prevalent in the area. However, the locals could not agree on the spelling of the name "ptarmigan," therefore to avoid embarrassment they named the community Chicken.

Chicken, Alaska has officially reported a minimum temperature of -60 F this morning as the first official recording of -60 F in Alaska for this winter season! Other locations in the Eastern Interior recorded temperatures in the -50 F range. 🥶

One of our Alaska Outdoors trips was in Seward when Lydia Jacoby won the Gold Medal in the 100-meter breaststroke. Lydia is a 17-year-old senior from Seward, AK swimming in her first Olympics.

I took this video (while leading the tour) moments after her victory. In a small town where everyone knows each other the small-town pride was apparent.

Last year when the lock-down occurred, and the local pools were closed, Libby trained in Resurrection Bay.

Congratulations Libby, your hard work ethic and dedication is an inspiration to us all. We are very proud of you.
