🥷🏼 Meet the melanistic manta, the ninja of the seas!

🎨 Most mantas have dark grey backs and lighter bellies, but in some cases they can be almost completely black, they are known as melanistic or black morph mantas. The opposite also happens, some mantas appear much lighter, almost white, they are known as Leucistic mantas. But perhaps the most spectacular colour morphism seen is mantas, is the rare case of the “pink” manta in Lady Elliot Island, Australia.

🌍 Raja Ampat in Indonesia has the highest percentage of melanistic reef mantas, with 60% of individuals displaying the colour, whilst Ecuador, on the opposite side of the globe, has the highest percentage of melanistic oceanic mantas, 16%. 🖤 The reason for this colour morphism remains largely unknown. While many terrestrial species display this dark colouration (for example, a black panther is just a melanistic jaguar!), the phenomenon is extremely rare underwater, of the hundreds species of cartilaginous fish, only 2 are known to possess this trait, and those are the 2 identified manta species!

👻This Halloween learn the threats to our favourite species:

🪦Pseudo-remedy consumption
Manta and devil ray gill plates are consumed as a psuedo-remedy in regions of China and East Asia. This is the main driving force behind their capture.

🎃Bycatch
Manta and devil rays can get easily entangled in fishing nets and die as bycatch. Even when released alive, it doesn’t seem like they have good survival rates.

🧟‍♂️Unsustainable & unregulated tourism
Tourism can drive mantas away from important cleaning and feeding sites through overcrowding and poor in-water behaviour.

🧛🏻‍♂️Climate Change
Climate breakdown threatens to change the distribution and abundance of zooplankton which mantas feed on. Coral bleaching may also cause habitat destruction around cleaning stations.

🚀 Team Manta is almost there! 🌏🏃‍♀️🏄‍♂️ 🚀 Over the past month, people have been working together to swim, run, cycle, surf, and so much more, virtually travelling 98% of the 5,200km journey from the Peru Mobulid Project in South America to the Pacific Manta Research Group in Revillagigedo, Mexico. But we need YOUR help to cross the finish line and raise crucial funds for manta ray conservation! 🌊✨
