This duck was like “nahhhh…I’m leaving”

Let's check in with the drake mallard that migrated to Arkansas before hunting season began. We posted this bird's migration path on November 20th, go take a look at that post if you haven't seen it already. This drake arrived in Arkansas on 11/14/2023 and established a pattern of hopping between an impoundment adjacent to flooded timber and flooded rice fields before hunting started. This pattern continued until 11/22/2023 at 6:00 am when he decided to leave the area, likely because he encountered a hunter. Most of our GPS marked birds do not relocate when hunting season starts, but this bird was utilizing an area without state or federal refuge which may explain why he left. He flew about 70 miles south and established the same pattern bouncing between flooded timber and flooded agricultural fields. Good luck to our Arkansas neighbors when hunting season opens again this weekend!

Welcome back buddy! We captured this drake mallard on November 29 of 2022 at Hop-In refuge and he returned to Tennessee on November 22 of 2023. In one year, this duck traveled 5,163 miles just to end up using the same exact wetlands he used last winter. In fact, 25% of our ducks who make a fall migration return to within 10 miles of where they spent the winter the previous year!

The ducks are back and so is hunting season! We deployed this GPS transmitter on a drake mallard from Tennessee National Wildlife Refuge on 11.03.2022. He spent his summer up around Lake Winnipeg before heading south for the winter. He took a different path on his fall migration and is currently in NE Arkansas. Our last check in with this bird was the day before hunting season opened in Arkansas. We will check back in on him again to see how he reacted to hunters returning to the wetlands.

The stars finally aligned for me to move my pit into the levee of the slough. This simple 200 yard move should increase my duck harvest numbers by 25%! And so it begins! The first transmitter harvest of the year comes on the opening day of South Dakota’s duck season. We will redeploy this transmitter on another mallard this winter, but hunters receive a GPS movement map and a replica transmitter to commemorate their harvest. Remember to report your bands and be safe in the field!

As fall quickly approaches we start looking north in anticipation of ducks initiating their fall migration. This hen mallard spent her summer in North Dakota where duck brood numbers jumped nearly 80% according to July brood surveys. Take a look at the link for the full article.
