Lisboneye

Lisboneye Book me as your exclusive travel companion through Lisbon and its surroundings : [email protected] That's basically what I do, à fond.

Building your nest somewhere involves diving into the local culture, overeating because you want to taste everything, turning the city upside down out of mere curiosity, struggling to learn the language, meeting up with fellow city dwellers until late. And I report about that on www.lisboneye.eu + I take visitors on a tour through the city.

Lisbon shines best in the ☀️

When it rains, the streets become slippery (try to walk on the calçada Portuguesa if you dare). Locals might not be in the best mood either.

So, what to do on a rainy day? Visit the Maat museum, where Joana Vasconcelos's Plug-in solo exhibition awaits.

In this colorful exhibition, she takes inspiration from Portuguese history, traditions, geopolitics, and feminism, all presented with a refreshing and often funny touch. It's a great way to brighten a gloomy day, and you can explore it until March 31, 2023.

I've created an exciting Lisboneye walk! It's a stroll through Quinta do Mocho, a predominantly African neighbourhood near the airport. This place is famous for being one of Europe's largest open-air art galleries, yet it remains one of Lisbon's best-kept secrets. The mystique surrounding this neighbourhood stems from its challenging past, marked by issues like unemployment, crime, drugs, and violence.

It's almost unbelievable, but the transformative power of urban art has brought a fresh lease of life to Quinta do Mocho. Today, you can immerse yourself in over 100 stunning urban art murals, a canvas painted by acclaimed Portuguese artists like VHILS and Bordalo II, as well as visionary artists from France, Brazil, Spain, Israel, Argentina, and various corners of the globe.

Exploring this neighbourhood offers an unparalleled experience, far from the typical tourist routes. In just about 2 hours, you'll be introduced to top-notch urban art, uncover lesser-known aspects of Lisbon, and witness the incredible impact of art as a driving force for social progress.

Located just an hour's drive from Lisbon, Sesimbra is a coastal gem renowned for its stunning beaches. Some secluded shores are accessible only by boat. Moreover, within these crystal-clear waters where fishing is prohibited, fortunate visitors may even spot playful dolphins in their natural habitat.

Quinta do Mocho is one of Europe's largest open-air public art galleries, but oddly enough, it remains one of Lisbon's best-kept secrets. That's because for many years a very dark cloud hung over this social neighborhood near Lisbon airport: unemployment, crime, drugs and violence were widespread. It's hard to imagine today. It is all the more remarkable that art was the driving force behind this transformation from a no-go zone to a pleasant social neighbourhood. Now Quinta do Mocho is home to more than 100 walls of urban art, by Portuguese artists such as , , and , in addition to many French, Brazilian, Spanish, Argentinian, and other foreign artists. It is a kind of Wonderland, and the level of art displayed is often astonishing. I organize visits in this neighborhood and share what I know about the works of art and about the history and uniqueness of Quinta do Mocho. Interested? DM me!
