Bush Tetras at Tier 3/TR3 (225 West Broadway), 3/20/80. These photos, taken by the venue’s booker Hilary Jaeger , are in my book in black and white (that third one is even on the cover), but this is the first time the first two have been seen in color (online, at least)! Note Lydia Lunch standing in the front row in that first photo, second from right. These are incredible photos of an incredible band; thank you so much Hilary for your generosity in sharing these!

Velvet Underground drummer Maureen Tucker turns 79 today. The first two photos are by Stephen Shore, ca 1966/67. The third image is from a local Long Island newspaper, also ca 1966. The fourth is from a rarely seen Warhol film called “Moe in Bondage,” in which Tucker’s bandmates tie her to a chair and then eat fruit. And the final image is because we live in hell.

John Cale, Mick Ronson, David Byrne, and Patti Smith at the Lower Manhattan Ocean Club (121 Chambers St), 7/21/76. Cale plays a free show in Prospect Park tonight (see you there!), Smith opened for the National at MSG last night (should’ve been the other way around but whatever), and Talking Heads reissued the Stop Making Sense soundtrack yesterday (plus Byrne finally fessed up to treating his bandmates like s**t, to People Magazine of all things). Photo by Michael Putland.

50 years ago today, the Broadway Central Hotel unexpectedly collapsed, killing four people and injuring several others. With it went the Mercer Arts Center, a theater complex housed in the hotel. In addition to high-profile off-Broadway plays, the Mercer was also a home base for the city’s glam rock/proto-punk scene, with the New York Dolls, Magic Tramps, Jayne County, Su***de, Ruby and the Rednecks, Modern Lovers, and Patti Smith all performing there. It was also home to the first location of the experimental art and music venue the Kitchen, which has luckily relocated to SoHo just a few months prior to the collapse. With the loss of the building, the scene had to rebuild from scratch, leading local bands to seek out new, smaller venues like Club 82, Mothers, and (most notably) CBGB.

Dany Johnson deejaying at Club 57, early ‘80s. I’m so honored that Dany - who was also a longtime resident deejay at Pyramid Club, the Mudd Club, and Area (among others), and a member of the great band Pulsallama - is spinning tonight at my book release party at Baker Falls (101 Ave A)! It’s doubling as the club’s opening night, and there are multiple links to the contents of the book - the space was previously the longtime home of Pyramid Club (and, before that, the New Rican Village), and it’s now owned by my dude Nick Bodor (formerly of Cake Shop and alt.coffee) along with the folks from the Knitting Factory. Come hang out, say hi, pick up a book, dance, and get a first glimpse of the newest iteration of a legendary space! (There’s a $5 cover just to keep the Ave A bro brigade from coming in and killing the vibe) Photo by Robert Carrithers.
