They say the Grand Canyon teaches you how to paddle her by building the challenge over the first few days. We got a big lesson on Day 2, at House Rock Rapid. It lived up to its name and rocked our house!
We feared something like this might happen, rigged our gear for it, tried to avoid it, but in the end it became a great teacher, for a very low cost.
In the moment all I could think of was, "Oh 💩💩💩!"
Being underwater 🤿 in a rapid can be surprisingly calm. The water is bright and clean, there's little sense of the chaos happening at the surface and the seconds feel like minutes. 😳 Once I popped back up I looked around for Jeremiah and Erin, who were up and actively swimming, so I knew they were good. Then I started breathing again.
🌊The big raft floated upside down into the huge eddy below the rapid, where we began the plan to flip this 2,000 lbs monster back over. The rest of the group was awesome, getting through and helping us get back up and on the river again. We were a little rattled and a few items of gear lighter, but we had to get back up in the oar seat. This was the start of the Roaring 20's, 10 or so miles with rapids every 1/4 mile that make you earn it.
We processed the flip as a boat team and developed strategies that we could practice and implement, and we ended the big water day feeling stronger and wiser. As the days went by we learned from our mistakes, practiced with some great teachers and took on the bigger rapids down the flow in style. I couldn't have asked for better comrades, thanks guys. 🚣
You never know from where or when the next lesson is going to come, you just have to be open to it.

This is #canlife. A day in the life of Hamlet, our 67 year old canned ham travel trailer with over 180K miles on him (just since 2012).
He's still rockin' miles and miles of bumpy, dusty, and narrow forest roads like a champ.
