I’m back this week with some more hits from my Mississauga Food Tour courtesy of my man Aashim .eat.repeat and maybe…just maybe the best falafel I’ve ever eaten for this week’s .

I’ll get straight to it, if this wasn’t the best falafel I’ve had, it's definitely the most unique because inside of the falafel from is a pocket of sumac onion. On top of the added flavour from that magic you get from the marriage of onion and sumac, it also ensures a beautiful moist interior to this perfectly cooked falafel.

In fact, that falafel is the perfect representation of everything I tried at Falafel Plus; something that I love and have eaten countless times before but just done perfectly and taken to another level.

Their Pita, baked fresh to order, was still warm and incredibly soft with the tiniest hint of sweetness. Incredible. The hummus was the perfect smooth but not too smooth consistency and served with a pool of olive oil, chickpeas and sprinkled with herbs (plus more sumac!).

They nail the details on everything here and if Falafel Plus was transported to Lawrence Ave in Scarborough it would immediately give anyone on that stretch a run for their money.
And anyone from Scarborough knows that is VERY high praise!

This place is so good it’s worth a stand alone trip to Mississauga just for their food!

I think by now it’s an almost indisputable fact that the best food in the city is found tucked away in Scarborough strip malls.  If you’re not a believer yet, here’s even more proof for this week’s !

Deep in a plaza, not visible from the street and located under the sign of the neighbouring Caribbean bar, is even more tucked away than most.  They’ve built a solid following through online orders and pop-ups over the last couple years and now have a storefront opened in the last year.

Now for the important details; they serve fresh Ensaymadas, a popular Filipino sweet brioche bread usually topped with sugar and cheese.  What makes their version stand out is the addition of souped-up toppings that turn these into Ensaymada-Cupcake hybrids.

Ube, Mango, and Red Velvet were in my mixed box and I really enjoyed them all but I think my favourite would have to be the cheese version.  It features butter cream piled high with shredded gouda cheese for a classic sweet and savoury mix.

The brioche buns themselves are light and sweet and would be fantastic on their own even before the various icings and toppings are added.

Seek them out at their home near Kennedy and Ellesmere.  If you have your heart set on a particular flavour (they also have pandan, matcha, cinnamon bun and cookie crumble plus monthly flavours) put an order in ahead of time.  Also make sure to check the hours before you visit as they are only open Wednesday, Friday and Weekend afternoons.

Back for another Mississauga edition of !

This time it's a tribute to and their top notch Nabulsi Kunafa, one of my all time favourite desserts.

It combines crispy shredded pastry soaked with sweet syrup, layered with salty, extremely stretchy Nabulsi cheese and then topped with crushed pistachios. It really is an incredible combo.

Burger Maker does a fantastic version and gets huge points for making every order fresh. It really makes a huge difference for this dish. Definitely one of the best versions in the city.

We're checking out some Maharashtrian food in Mississauga for this week's !

Imli foods is tucked away in a neighbourhood of mostly offices and factories but this gem is well worth seeking out.

If you're unfamiliar, like I was before visiting Imli, Maharashtra is a state in Western India and home to Mumbai. They offer a number of unique items that you won't find in the spots specializing in Northern or Southern Indian foods that are more common around the city.

Pictured here are the Sabudana Wade, a deep fried fritter made of potato, peanuts, chilies, ginger and other spices. The star ingredient that really surprised me was the tapioca pearls!

These were absolutely incredible when eaten fresh out of the kitchen. The bold flavours combined with the texture that was both crispy and melt in your mouth soft, was a lot to take in. I think it actually broke my brain for a second. 🤣

It had been a while since I had eaten something so unique and incomparable. An instant favourite.

Imli has a large menu with lots to try plus lots of pantry and fridge items to take home too.

We're back at trying all of their empanadas for this week's !

, in Markham just south of Costco, serves up amazing Colombian dishes and has become one of my favourite spots in the area.

This time I decided to sample all six of their savoury empanadas (they also do a sweet one with cheese, plantain, guava and dulce de leche that I'll have to try another day).

All six were fantastic but my top 3 were...

🌶️La Texana: stewed beef, potatoes, hogao and jalapeno.

🦀La Pacifica: The empanada is made with coconut and filled with shrimp, crab, potatoes and hogao.

🌿La Verde: The empanada is made with cilantro & spinach and filled with stewed beef, potatoes and hogao.

*If you're unfamiliar with hogao it is a sauce or condiment made with tomatoes, onion, garlic, cilantro and a variety of other herbs and spices.

🌿All of their empanadas can also be made vegetarian by request too!

The fresh salsa that accompanies your empanadas is amazing and they always give me instructions on the proper way to use it!😂
"You bite the empanada and then scoop a little salsa in...no dipping!"

Words to live by!

We're checking out a solid lunch spot serving up delicious food and large portions on this week's !

Palma's Continental Cuisine is tucked away on Midwest Road in a mostly industrial pocket of Scarborough just a few steps away from the Ellesmere RT station.

They're a popular lunch destination for the workers in the nearby offices, factories and auto shops. Palma's serves a rotating variety of Filipino dishes paired with rice or pancit (noodles).

I went with the BBQ Pork and another pork dish, that I didn't catch the name of, covered in a slightly spicy gravy. The pancit was a mix of vermicelli like noodles as well as some thicker ones with cabbage and some other veg mixed in.

You can try two dishes with rice or noodles for about $12 and the portions are massive. I easily got two meals out of it.

A solid spot for a hearty lunch if you're in the area or can make a quick hop off stop while traveling by on the RT!

If you're somehow still hungry after your lunch you can also hit up Montmartre Bakery at the other end of Midwest Road for a danish or their fanous strudel.

It's a perfect lunch slice for this week's !

on Old Kingston (aka Scarborough's Golden Triangle of Pizza, with Fratelli & Lamanna's just down the street) recently started offering lunch time slices Wednesday - Friday(11:30 - 1:30 or when they sell out). It's the perfect chance to try their amazing pizza if you can't commit to a whole pie!

The pizza selection changes daily but today the Calabrian Chilli and Spinach slice had my heart. The crust is thin and light with a solid chew and just the right crispness. The toppings are generous and the chillies on this one added the perfect amount of heat and flavour.

Whole pizzas have to be ordered ahead on their website and the menu changes weekly, although there are some constants week to week like the fantastic pepperoni, basil & hot honey.

It's snack time for this week's !

What could be better than house made Labneh spread over warm fresh Somun and drizzled with luxurious olive oil?

I can't think of much!

offers house made balls of Labneh (a yogurt cheese perfect for spreading) preserved in extra virgin olive oil with black cumin seeds. Paired with their Somun (wood fired bread) fresh out of the oven it's a pretty unbeatable snack.

If you're in the VP and Kingston Road area it's a must visit spot for one of their sandwiches, but don't overlook a jar of their Labneh to take home for later!

We're visiting an old favourite with a new look for this week's !

I stopped in the newly expanded and renovated Pomarosa]
for their Arepa Pabellón. A recreation of the national dish of Venezuela in Arepa form!

Pulled beef, sweet plantain, black beans, cotija, queso blanco, queso fresco and guasacaca (an avocado salsa) are piled into a freshly made Arepa. Absolutely outstanding mix of flavours and textures. I'm a sucker for plantain and their sweetness here really tied everything together so well.

🌱 They also offer a vegan version minus the beef and cheeses with added beans, plantain and avocado!

Pomarosa] was a staple on our East Danforth Food Tour. They're known for their fantastic coffee and juice bar options, 's ever expanding and evolving menu of Venezuelan, Colombian and Latin American food favourites and for their beautiful space designed by Chef Luis' Wife & partner Vivian.

Now they have expanded that beautiful space to add a dining area, larger kitchen and even a freezer wall with goodies to take home.

It's a definite must visit whenever you're in the East Danforth area!

We’re eating some amazing, affordable, warm you up on a cold winter day comfort food on this week’s !

Check out this Pav Bhaji from , on Markham just north of Ellesmere.  I can’t think of many better options for a low cost lunch on a snowy February day.  Spicy, mashed, stewed vegetables (Bhaji) served with warm, pan toasted, buttery rolls (Pav).

Panchvati’s new location on Markham Road is a gem and a go to for ingredients for Indian and South Asian cooking.  Oddly enough the old location is still open just around the corner on Ellesmere but I’m told will be closing soon (the Instagram locater still leads you to the old location).

Their food counter is a great spot to stop in for a meal or just a snack.  They’ve got all the hits; Samosa Chaat, Vadapav, Panipuri (a personal fav), Mango Lassi, Fresh Sugar Cane Juice in the Summer and lots more.

But back to their Pav Bhaji because it really hits the spot.  They add some of the sauce from the vegetable mix into the pan with butter before toasting the rolls and it really imparts some great flavour into the bread.  Topped with fresh onion and cilantro it’s a great combo of textures and flavours and dipping the toasty roll into those spiced stewed veggies is endlessly satisfying.  For $5.99 you really can’t go wrong!

We're visiting a landmark bakery in the Port Union neighbourhood for this week's !

has been serving a mix of baked goods in this community for over 40 years! Breads, buns, donuts, danishes, muffins as well as Filipino specialties like empanadas, asado and tons more.

But today it's all about their Ube Pandasal, a sweet bread roll filled with purple yam (Ube) jam and cheddar cheese. It's a perfect sweet/savoury combination in this pillowy soft roll and I can't get enough of these.

They started as a special but have been so popular they're a regular item now. They go for a dollar each and they go fast so try to get in before lunchtime to pick some up or you'll probably be out of luck.

It's Wing Night for this week's !
toronto at Morningside & Kingston checks all the boxes of a good wing spot for me...

✅ Tons of flavours and sauces to choose from

✅ Great fries and sides available

✅ and of course crispy perfectly fried wings that can hold up to being covered in sauce for a while without getting soggy.

The amount of wing options here is crazy, we're talking over a hundred to choose from and a good majority of them are based off flavours from around the world. Flavours like Scandinavian, Guyanese, Croatian, Tokyo etc... are all intriguing.

Their menu doesn't give you much info on what you're getting from these flavours so you just have to "wing it"...maybe that's where their name comes from.

Alternatively I'm sure you can call and ask for some more info but I have fun just picking some sauces and seeing what I get. I haven't been disappointed yet. Spicy Garpar, Guyanese and Texas BBQ have been some of my favourites so far.

As good as their wings are their House Fries might be the best thing on the menu, which is why it's the main picture for this post. Fries piled with chicken, garlic sauce, ranch, red onion, cheese, roasted garlic and some real fiery green chillies. There are so many toppings you've really got to dig to get to the fries.

Rumour has it the chicken used on the fries is cooked on a shawarma spit left behind by the previous tenants of this location Golden Laffa (later changed to Shawarma Ju**ie), an amazing Iraqi shawarma spot that used beautiful made to order Laffa bread. Maybe .toronto can confirm if this is true or just Scarborough urban legend!

All my Scarborough Wing connoisseurs need to just Wing It and check this spot out of you haven't yet!

I checked out my new local Cantina for this week’s !

The Machete de Birria called out to me when I checked out the menu at the newly opened third location, Mexitaco Cantina at Birchmount and Ellesmere.

The Machete is an extra long quesadilla in a lightly fried corn tortilla stuffed with beef birria and tons of cheese.  If you’re unfamiliar with birra, it’s stewed meat (beef in this case), seasoned with chiles and spices.  The Machete is also served with a side of the birria consomé for dipping and topped with onions and cilantro.  It’s a great combo of flavours!

I visited Canitina just before the most recent lockdown and it looks like it will be a great place for a dine-in meal.  A solid selection of mezcal and tequila behind the bar, big beer list, happy hour specials and plans for live music in the future all sound like a good time to me!

For now it’s yet another solid take out option in the area.

31/12/2021

This week's isn't new at all, quite the opposite, it's all about nostalgia.

I just finished my last Banh Mi ever from Rose's on Gerrard. They're closing their doors for good and retiring after today.

Flashback to about 15ish years ago. I had just finished school and started down the career path. I moved into an apartment on Broadview with a friend from college. Right across from Riverdale park with a view of the downtown skyline. We thought we were living large!

Other than a few years out of town for College I had barely explored much outside of my bubble. Living here opened me up to the rest of the East End; Danforth, Gerrard India Bazaar and of course Gerrard Chinatown and Rose's!

Rose's sandwiches became a staple over the years. The price was right, I think they went for $2.50 in those days and they were always delicious. It was always a pleasure to visit their little shop.

Over the years as I drifted back towards Scarborough I would always make a point to stop back in every so often for the great Banh Mi and that hit of nostalgia to a time when I really started to get in touch with the city I had already live my whole life in.

After being an East End staple for decades it was beautiful to see the line up outside the shop and to hear everyone wish them a happy retirement when they left with their final Banh Mi!

24/12/2021

For this week's I was able to get an amazing brunch in at just before this pandemic roared back and made dining in an uncertainty again. 😩

from had recommended this one a while back and when someone who makes food as amazing as Chef Luis gives you a recommendation you need to listen!

The Halawa Pancakes were incredible. Buttermilk pancakes topped with an orange blossom tahini syrup, pistachios and dried flower petals looked as beautiful as they tasted. The heavier tahini syrup sat on the pancakes without completely absorbing like a standard syrup would. So good!

The Sumac Poached eggs did not disappoint either. Perfect poached eggs on a bed of pickled lebneh (a creamy yogurt cheese), topped with toast bits and sumac. The runny yolks of the poached eggs mixed with the slightly sour lebneh were a different egg combo than I'm used to but I loved it!

Finally the halloumi fries were an excellent side to share. The fried salty cheese and the pesto were another winning combo.

This spot lived up to the hype and more. The vibe in their tiny dining room is great, the staff is so friendly and welcoming and I loved the menu of Levantine food with a twist. Can't wait to try more!

17/12/2021

We’ve got some incredibly tasty shawarma in fresh baked Samoon bread on this week’s .

Alforat, located in a plaza on Victoria Park between Lawrence and Eglinton, is a new Iraqi restaurant that offers shawarma, kebabs and other specialties like Quzi (a roasted lamb dish) and whole chickens stuffed with rice and vegetables.

They bake their own Samoon, a soft diamond shaped bread.  This fresh bread is an amazing touch and makes their already excellent shawarma even that much better when put in a Samoon sandwich.  The chicken is moist and packed with flavour and is offset with crunchy cucumbers and some juicy tomato chunks.  It all comes together to make a really great sandwich.

Their shawarma plate is boosted by the fresh bread treatment as well.  The beef shawarma is piled on a freshly made flatbread that is incredibly soft with a nice chewiness.  The standard pickled vegetable salad is great for balance and their toum (garlic sauce) is incredibly potent, a garlic lover’s dream!  Their hot sauce packs some nice heat as well.  An excellent plate all around.

The location puts them on the outskirts of the most shawarma-dense area in the city but they can definitely hold their own.  Combined with Sumaq Iraqi Grill, another favourite just around the corner on Lawrence, Iraqi food is definitely on the come up and I’m Alforat….🤓

We're checking out giants Simits from a back alley bakery for this week's !

A Simit is a giant Turkish variation of a bagel. They offer a similar taste but different texture. The Simit is crispy on the outside with a soft, light interior compared to the more dense bagel. Also, they are huge! (See the final picture for scale 🤣)

These are from , a bakery with a tiny storefront that is tucked away behind a plaza on Bellamy just north of Ellesmere.

The Simits here are baked fresh daily and are the perfect pairing with a coffee or tea. I like to tear chunks off mine and dip in cream cheese or honey.

They also offer fresh bagels as well. Plain, jalapeno & cheddar, cinammon raisin, chocolate and more are available.

I picked up a box of their sesame cookies as well. Great toasted sesame flavour and a nice crunch make them another perfect pairing beside a coffee or tea.

If you're looking for fresh baked bagels or Simits in Scarborough you have to go find this place. It's located in the back of the building where Avenue is and Drupati's used to be. Just follow the signs for "the big bagel!"

We're looking at some mind blowingly good chocolate for this weeks .

This is the Jaguar Crunch bar from , an award winning chocolate made from Mexican white cacao. The crunch comes from roasted red cacao nibs, adding a perfect balance to the incredibly smooth Jaguar chocolate.

This stuff may have instantly made a chocolate snob out of me...going to be really hard to go back to vending machine bars after trying this! The texture and the balance of deep flavours is incredible. You have to try it to believe it!

It goes perfectly with one of their Mayan Mocha, a coffee/chocolate blend. I opted for the 5 Chili Bomba which really adds some chili heat to the drink. Great cold weather warm up!

Aside delicious products their business model of sustainability and giving back in the farming communities where they source their cacao is incredible.

You can check them out at their store on St Clair or shop for any of their products online as well! Could be the perfect gift for the chocolate lover in your life!

Forgot to follow up on my Friday post about a couple of weeks ago. I had highlighted some of the savoury food I checked out there. Incredible eggplant choka and bake & saltfish. Now onto the sweet stuff...

Their salara is a stand out. Really moist dough surrounding the sweet shredded coconut. Red dye in the coconut makes it pop visually.

A pretty perfect dessert and a must while you're there, and don't forget a pine tart too!

Check my Friday post from a couple weeks ago for more good stuff from Shereen's!

26/11/2021

We’re back on St Clair West for this week.  When I “cheat” on my East End food spots it’s usually gonna be in this neighbourhood.  The food options within a few blocks on this stretch are just nuts!  Especially the Latin food.

I recently noticed .latienda while walking by and popped in to see what they served.  What I found was actually a mini Latin food hall housing five restaurants!!  Mexican Street Food, Papusas, Tacos, Desserts...and this week’s highlight, Cuban food from

I picked up their Guisado de Puerco.  A rich stew with pork so tender that it slides apart under the weight of your fork.  It’s served with fried plantain and some killer rice and beans.

I really appreciate places that can work magic with their rice dishes and this is one of those places.  The Moros (Rice with Black Beans) has so much flavour and enough perfectly cooked beans it would be a satisfying meal on it’s own, but with that stewed pork and plantain added it’s next level.  The generous portion was enough for a decent sized meal for two as well!

The Cuban menu alone would be more than enough to bring me back to La Tienda but with four other whole restaurants to try you know I’ll be back soon.

Side note: the Papusa spot here ( .ca ) serves something called a Pizza Papusa 🤯  Anyone tried this.  Report back ASAP please if you have! 🙏😂

We’re back with another must visit Scarborough gem for this week’s !

Minerva Tiffins is tucked away in a quiet plaza food court near Warden and Eglinton and they are a go to spot for South Indian food.

This trip we checked out their Upma Pesarattu. Pesarattu is very similar to a dosa, the major difference being it’s made with green gram, or mung beans. The Upma is like a thick porridge made with seasoned roasted semolina or rice flour. The two dishes are eaten individually but they also pair perfectly with the Upma tucked into the Pesarattu. The texture of the Upma combined with the crisped exterior of the Pesarattu is money!

The ginger chutney on the side is a phenomenal addition too. Packed with some heat and tons of ginger flavour. The peanut chutney is a nice counterbalance to the heat and adds an entire different flavour to the mix.

I always grab an order of Punugulu when I’m here. Very similar to Pholourie, these savoury deep fried dough fritters are amazing with the peanut and ginger chutneys.

Never pass up the chai here either, especially with the weather feeling closer and closer to Winter everyday. This is a perfect fall meal altogether. Comforting, warming and delicious.

After a little Summer hiatus we're back with more !

I recently hit up Aragoz, a new take out spot serving up all kinds of Egyptian 🇪🇬 specialties at Markham & Eglinton in Scarborough.

Their menu is extensive! Tons of amazing looking dishes, some that even need a day or more's notice to prepare. Everything is made fresh to order so using their online ordering system ahead of time is recommended.

I went with the...
➡️ Hawawshi (like an Egyptian beef patty, so that was a must!)
➡️ Moussaka (roasted eggplant, potatoes and hot peppers in a tomato sauce)
➡️ Hmamm Kadab (a boneless chicken leg stuffed with rice & liver)
➡️ Baba Ganouj & Baladi Bread (smoked eggplant with tahini, garlic, balsamic and more...perfect for dipping)
➡️ Kharoob drink (made from the seed pod of the carob tree. Complex flavour with a sweet chocolatey after taste)

Everything was fantastic. The standout would be the Hawawshi, Spicey ground beef in the perfectly crisped dough that will have to be ordered everytime I'm back here.

🌱 There's a great variety of vegan and plant based dishes on the menu too. The Baba Ganouj & Moussaka I ordered fell into that category. They also had a number of variations of Ful (a braised fava beans stew) that look fantastic.

The owner, Adam, was also incredibly nice, taking the time to talk with me and give me some suggestions for my next order. On top of all this he also runs a Sandwich shop out of this location as well that serves up Egyptian street food sandwiches!

It's available on Uber Eats under "Sandwich Man By Aragoz" but I'd recommend calling in your order to keep you money flowing into his business instead of Uber.

Shout out to BluffsTo for putting this one on my radar. They're account is a great resource for everything in the Bluffs community!

We’re pushing even farther east with this weeks !

I was recently in and in need of something good to eat when I came across Tacheena, an Iraqi restaurant in the northern part of the city.

They have a sizable menu ranging from shawarma and falafel, both excellent, to more substantial lamb and chicken dinners but what really caught my eye was their namesake Beef Tacheena, something I’ve never seen and was not familiar with.  The owner explained it is a popular dish in Iraq but most Iraqi restaurants around here may leave it off the menu in favour of dishes that their non-Iraqi customers may be more familiar with.

It starts with a layer of rice, potatoes and peas that is then blanketed with a generous portion seasoned ground beef and finally topped off with toum and a fiery hot sauce.  Everything is seasoned perfectly and the flavours blend together so well.

Side note:  Any Iraqi spots I’ve been to really pack the heat in their hot sauces.  I’m not sure if it's a coincidence but in my experience they’ve been considerably hotter than at other restaurants from that part of the world.  Delicious and hot! 🇮🇶🔥

The Tacheena also came with an incredible fresh salad of pickled turnip, sumac onions, greens and pickled hot peppers.  A perfect side.

The restaurant itself looks to have a nice dining area that they can hopefully use again soon.  In the meantime the parking lot has a view of the Otonabee River just across the street so it’s a great place for an impromptu tailgate with your meal!

It's !

One scoop mango, one scoop pistachio + jellies, fruit, chocolate sauce, chopped nuts and a waffle cookie🤤

That was my first order from Lingan Cream House (also spelled Lingam), a Sri Lankan spot at Markham and Steeles specializing in snacks and frozen desserts.

The huge line ups sometimes snaking their way through the parking lot had peaked my interest so it was finally time to check this place out.

They offer a variety of snacks, hot food and short eats but the main attraction seemed to be their choice of ice cream based treats. You can order a number of sundaes or floats featuring about 16 different types of ice cream. The flavours range from tropical fruits like pineapple and mango to things like cookies and cream and caramel so there's a wide range for everyone.

I went with the jelly with fruit salad and two scoops.

It was the perfect treat for a hot day and definitely somewhere I'll stop in again!

Be warned line ups can get long during peak times in the evenings and weekends.

It's !

This one's a bit of a cheat as I'm revisiting an old favourite, but it's been so long it's practically new again for me!

It's the incredible Arancini from on McCowan near Sheppard in .

If you're unfamiliar, Arancini are Italian rice balls that are coated in bread crumbs and deep fried. They can be stuffed with an assortment of things. Francesca's offers meat (pictured), cheese and a veggie version as well.

This Scarborough staple has been operating since 1994 and is helmed by a staff with experience across Toronto and Italy that dates decades earlier than that.

They offer a lot here:

Bread ✅
Hot table items ✅

Everything I've tried over the years is always top quality. You don't last this long in food obsessed Scarborough unless you're one of the best!

I finished off my meal with another of my favourites, their ricotta & cherry Krapfen. A hole-less donut that migrated from Austria & Germany (hence the very non-Italian sounding name). You may also hear it referred to as a Berliner, Kraffen, Bombo or Bombolone as it has picked up many regional names over the years.

Good luck passing through Francesca's display cases without picking up a few delicious looking items!
