1h 30 min from Medjugorje to Split
The story of Split is already 17 centuries old, dating to the time the Roman Emperor Diocletian decided to build his Palace right on the peninsula near the great Roman city Salona, where he wanted to spend the last years of his life. During these 1700 years the Palace slowly turned into a city, which to this day lures with its rich tradition, glorious history and beauty of its natural and cultural heritage.
Diocletian Palace and the entire historical core of Split have been on the World Heritage UNESCO list ever since 1979, and not only for the extraordinary preservation of the Palace, but also because the Palace and its city (or the city and its Palace, if you like) continue to live a full life. All historical layers from the old Rome, middle ages till today are still visible and alive in this structure. A walk through the ancient city takes you through time, along the great examples of ancient architecture like Peristyle, the middle aged Romanesque Church and Gothic Palace, Renaissance portals of the noblemen’s houses, Baroque facades and modern architecture superbly merged in the rich heritage.
Such stratification is mirrored in everyday life of Split. Local inhabitants sit in the same cafes, restaurants, shop in the same stores as tourists, giving them the impression that, by arriving to Split, they became a part of the city and its rhythm. The vegetable market and the fish market represent the centre of each family’s life in Split, just as the entire social life of this city of 200 thousand reflects on the Riva (waterfront), where every guest should endeavour to have his coffee alongside noisy, temperamental folk of Split.
Split is much more than glorious architectural scenery. Split is also a venue for excellent gourmet and vine experiences, numerous cultural happenings like film and theatre festivals, exhibitions, excellent museums and concerts, a city which offers eclectic modes of entertainment starting with numerous clubs and bars, through street festivals to events such as Ultra Europe Festival visited each year by up to 100 thousand young people from around one hundred countries of the world. Split with its sport results is something only a handful of cities of similar size around the world can boast about as it is the home of a dozen Olympic medal winners as well as other sports medals.
When you tire of the city bustle, there’s Marjan, hill symbol over the city, with its forest, jogging trails, mountain climbing and biking, recreational terrains, but also the ancient churches where the late citizens of Split sought spiritual peace. Also very unusual to find in a city the size of Split are the numerous beaches with extraordinarily clean sea, from the well known Bačvice to the stone secluded oases’ all around Marjan.

3h from Medjugorje to Zadar
A city that according to the words of the Byzantine emperor and travel writer Constantine Porfirogenet is older than Rome, nowadays is one of the stronger tourist centres in Croatia. Every year Zadar is visited by hundreds of thousands tourists among which many famous people from the world of business, politics, film and entertainment.
It is also known as a city of various events that make it one of the most interesting and attractive cities to visit. Its creative genius is demonstrated by the modern world known works such as the Sea Organ and Greeting-to-Sun installation.
Centuries old tumultuous history, destruction and reconstruction have all left scars but also many written documents which are today a valuable cultural heritage of the city.
The historical periods have left preserved churches and cultural monuments with visible art from all styles of architecture dating from the Roman period and the middle Ages to modern architecture. There are about 70 of these in the old nucleus while the remaining ones can be found in the surroundings making up more than 600 cultural monuments.

45min from Medjugorje to Siroki Brijeg

The Thirty Franciscan Martyrs of Široki Brijeg. Thousands of pilgrims visit the Franciscan Monastery in Široki Brijeg every year, about one hour distant from Međugorje. On 7th February 1945 the Communist soldiers arrived and said “God is dead, there is no God, there is no Pope, there is no Church, there is no need of you, you also go out in the world and work.” The communists forgot that the Franciscans were working, most of the Franciscans were teaching in the adjoining school. Some of the Franciscans were famous professors and had written books. The communists asked them to remove their habits. The Franciscans refused. One angry soldier took the Crucifix and threw it on the floor. He said, “you can now choose either life or death.” Each of the Franciscans knelt down, embraced the Crucifix and said, “You are my God and my All.” The thirty Franciscans were taken out and slaughtered and their bodies burned in a nearby cave where their remains lay for many years. Today they are buried inside the Franciscan church. In our Gospel today Jesus said, “if anyone declares himself for me in the presence of men, I will declare myself for him in the presence of my Father in heaven.” The thirty Franciscan martyrs of Široki Brijeg are a powerful example of declaring oneself in the presence of others for Jesus. They lived something else Jesus also said in the Gospel, ‘Do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; fear him rather who can destroy both body and soul in hell.’

Witnessing to Jesus and following God’s way helps others who are lacking courage to follow Jesus. One of the soldiers in the firing squad at Široki Brijeg later said, “Since I was a child, in my family, I had always heard from my mother that God exists. To the contrary, Stalin, Lenin, Tito had always asserted and taught each one of us: there is no God. God does not exist! But when I stood in front of the martyrs of Široki Brijeg and I saw how those friars faced death, praying and blessing their persecutors, asking God forgive the faults of their executioners, it was then that I recalled to my mind the words of my mother and I thought that my mother was right: God exists!” That soldier converted and now he has a son a priest and a daughter a nun. As I said, witnessing to Jesus and following God’s way also helps others in the crowd who are lacking the courage to follow Jesus.”

30min from Medjugorje to archaeological museum Narona
Archaeological research conducted at the Plećašove štale site in 1995 and 1996 led to a sensational discovery of the remains of a Roman temple – the Augusteum – and 17 marble statues, both outsized and in natural height. These finds inspired the idea of presenting this unique archaeological site in an integral fashion, including both architectural remains and other specimens of the ample archaeological materials.
The cornerstone of the future museum was laid on 19 July 2004. The Narona Archaeological Museum was established by a directive passed by Croatia's Government in 2005 and, after exceptionally demanding construction works, it was formally inaugurated on 18 May 2007 as the first in situ museum in Croatia. Such an approach to the presentation of an archaeological site has enriched Croatia's museum scene and has few peers at the European or even global level. Thus far, the Museum has received three awards, including the Vladimir Nazor Award conferred to architect Goran Rako for the Museum's design, the Cemex Award conferred to the contractor MGA of Metković for its construction efforts, and the Croatian Tourism Board's Blue Flower Award conferred to the Narona Archaeological Museum for its special contribution to enriching Croatia's tourism product.
The Narona Archaeological Museum takes an active part in the “Night in the Museum” initiatives undertaken by the Croatian Museum Association as well as in the activities of its Museum Education and Cultural Action Department and events organised to mark International Museum Day. In the summer months, the Museum's outdoor terraces host a cultural event called the Naronitan Cultural Summer, including theatrical performances, exhibitions, concerts and book presentations.

3h from Medjugorje to National park Krka
The national park is a vast and primarily unaltered area of exceptional natural value, including one or more preserved or insignificantly altered ecosystems. The purpose of the park is primarily to serve science, culture, education and recreation, while tourism activities have also been introduced for its visitors.
Including the submerged part of the river at the mouth, the Krka River is 72.5 km long, making it the 22nd longest river in Croatia. It springs in the foothills of the Dinara mountain range, 2.5 km northeast of Knin. With its seven waterfalls and a total drop in altitude of 242 m, the Krka is a natural and karst phenomenon. The travertine waterfalls of the Krka River are the fundamental phenomenon of this river.
The need to legally protect the Krka River and its exceptional natural values was already recognized in the mid 20th century. The initiative to proclaim the Krka River a national park was again launched in 1971, with the drafting of a physical plan entitled Krka National Park: physical development plan. On 24 January 1985, the Parliament of the Socialist Republic of Croatia proclaimed the area covering 142 km² from the Early Croatian fortresses of Trošenj and Nečven to the Šibenik Bridge, including 3.5 km of the course of the Čikola River, a national park. Due to four urban centres (Skradin, Bilice, Raslina and Zaton), the construction of the Zagreb–Split motorway and the development of tourism and other economic activities in the area, in 1997 the Croatian Parliament revised the park boundaries by passing the Act on Amendments to the Act on the Proclamation of Krka National Park. The southern border of the park was shifted to upstream from the Skradin Bridge, and the northern part virtually all the way to Knin. The park boundaries stretch for 50 km along the upper and middle course of the Krka River (two kilometres downstream from Knin all the way to Skradin), and the lower course of the Čikola River (including the confluence and 3.5 km of the river canyon), in the territory of the towns of Knin, Drniš and Skradin, the City of Šibenik, and the municipalities of Ervenik, Kistanje and Promina.

45 min from Medjugorje to Blagaj Tekija
Blagaj Tekija
The Tekija was built on a solid rocky soil at the right side of the source of the Buna river, one of the biggest in Europe. A very high cliff stretches above the Tekija for some 240 meters. On top of that cliff lie the remains of Stjepan Vukcic-Kosaca’s fort-town dating back to the Middle Ages. The complex was damaged more than once because of rocks collapsing. The European nettle trees that grow from the cracks of the cliff above the Tekija significantly contribute to the frequency of the collapses. It is a well-known fact that the Tekija was rebulit after each of these unfortunate events, on multiple occasions such as: during the first half of the 17th century, in 1716.,1871.,1923., 1949., 1951., 1972. and 2011.

The primary purpse of the structure was to serve as a dervish Zikr praise-chanting (praising God and His names) venue, while the musafirhana (guest house) has a profane purpose.

The Tekija complex contained the following buildings (in the direction heading to the source of the river): in the front was a building with the same height as the Tekija today, in the back was another smaller building, after which was a domed mosque. These structures were then followed by present buildings, the turbe of Sari Saltuk and the Acik-basa and the Tekija itself. All five facilities made up the unique architectural complex.

During the reconstruction of the complex in 1952., the Institute for Protection of Cultural Monuments inhumed the remains of all other facilities except the Teija itself. The ruined facilities of the complex were rebuilt in 2012., following expert analysis of the dilapidated architectural complex.

30 min from Medjugorje-Mostar
The historic town of Mostar, spanning a deep valley of the Neretva River, developed in the 15th and 16th centuries as an Ottoman frontier town and during the Austro-Hungarian period in the 19th and 20th centuries. Mostar has long been known for its old Turkish houses and Old Bridge, Stari Most, after which it is named. In the 1990s conflict, however, most of the historic town and the Old Bridge, designed by the renowned architect Sinan, was destroyed. The Old Bridge was recently rebuilt and many of the edifices in the Old Town have been restored or rebuilt with the contribution of an international scientific committee established by UNESCO. The Old Bridge area, with its pre-Ottoman, eastern Ottoman, Mediterranean and western European architectural features, is an outstanding example of a multicultural urban settlement. The reconstructed Old Bridge and Old City of Mostar is a symbol of reconciliation, international co-operation and of the coexistence of diverse cultural, ethnic and religious communities.

2h 30min from Medjugorje to Dubrovnik (passports/personal documents needed)
In the Croatian region of Dalmatia along the Adriatic Sea is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Dubrovnik is idyllic yet bustling with activity. It has people yet it retains the natural sea shore beauty. Below are a few facts about the city that will make you think about making the city your next vacation destination.

1. The city is a seaport on the Mediterranean Sea and ancient enough to have other activities apart from soaking in the Mediterranean beaches. The city is as old as 7th century.

2. The city was the capital of the adventurous Republic of Ragusa, a maritime republic.

3. In 1979, UNESCO added the city of Dubrovnik in the list of World Heritage Centers.

4. The city is surrounded by 2 kilometers of ancient walls and fortifications. Most of its buildings are built using the Baroque style architectural designs.

5. The city receives approximately 7.2 hours of sun per day. This is about 2630 hours of sun annually. I am sure you are already thinking of heading there.

6. You can engage in almost every holiday activity in Dubrovnik. From jeep safari, horseback riding, canoe safari, kayaking, sailing to the Elafite Islands and a visit to the national park on the Island of Mljet; tourists will never be short of fun things to do.

7. Dubrovnik, being an independent state, was the first country to recognize the United States as a sovereign state when it declared independence from the British.

8. As if to welcome you to its beautiful beaches, Dubrovnik's altitude is just 3 meters above the sea level.

9. The city occupies a land mass of about 21.35 square kilometers (8.24 sq. mi). In that small space, you will find some of the oldest European museums and buildings.

10. The State of Dubrovnik was among the first countries to abolish slave trade in the 15th century. It seems the country valued freedom even that far back.

The city of Dubrovnik is the Eastern European Paradise. It is sort of what Hawaii is to North America. You will be missing out on Eastern Europe's best destination if you do not include the city in your itinerary.
