Work resumes after a couple of months time off. Front iron work is now done and the front patio and house is secured. The gate adds a nice bit of privacy without overwhelmingly enclosing the area. I’ll add screens to the “tree” security doors (this one matches the one upstairs from my bedroom out onto the rooftop patio)….and they will be the most beautiful screen doors I’ve ever had! Windowsill plants will trail out of the window “protectore” (security guard) for a pop of color. We are almost at the finish line! ❤️

(*The plywood door will make do until we get to carpentry)

Since I don’t speak or read Spanish and because there’s a bus stop at the corner of my house…I decided to do a little research on the new electric buses that circulate around Merida by just HOPPING ON one. The Va y Ven bus I took was super impressive. Comfy seats, friendly driver, not overly crowded, phone charging outlets, airconditioned, etc. And apparently free(??). If I’m understanding correctly, these are the first electric busses city-wide in all of Latin America. Way to go, Merida!

This route (one of many) took me all through Centro, including right to the doorstep of my neighborhood supermarket! I usually like to hoof it everywhere, but this is such an eco-friendly option when it’s crazy-hot, raining or when I’m tired or loaded down with packages.

I’m NOT crazy about the fact that they drive down my street but that’s just a NIMBY and entitled attitude (tinged with the fact that I know they totaled TWO of my friend’s cars in front of her house in the space of a month!!! 😬 Hopefylly, no more of THAT!!!)

So far…I’m a fan!

Super excited about a few minor design details that I’m seeing in person for the first time. My rooftop garden door gate that my contractor designed (I told him I wanted an “artistic squiggly tree”), my huge stove vent that I drew a picture of and the guys built WAY better than I ever expected, the gorgeous tiles that my friend Linda Ricci designed and the removal and rebuild of the rickety old front gate and “fence”.

Concrete is still drying on the rock facades and I may have gone over the top with too much stonework…will have to live with it for a while to see if I want to keep it all. I think with plants and vines, it will be softened up a lot.

Lots of dust everywhere!!! Tiles will be polished and much brighter when finished.

But so fun to see these design elements in place. Much better than the boring electric & plumbing going in!

We are now working on the outside, so it really feels like the end is near! A couple photos of what the facade has looked like at different stages. We are trying to preserve the rock wall (pillars will be restored exposed rock), a nice gate will be created and bougainvillea trained along the top to soften the edges. And yes, the concrete fretwork was saved (thank you Construction Gods!!!)

A few updates:

Upstairs loft bedroom and bathroom tile and cement is now all polished and sealed. The crew is now attacking the kitchen. Can’t wait to see the results when I arrive in 2 weeks!

A few small updates: Polished cement surrounds around the door & window passthroughs and built-in shelves in the front room are done, kitchen island is being created (the entire unit will be clad in a white quartz waterfall design) and we are playing with shapes for a custom-made stove hood vent. Upstairs floors and tile walls are being polished. Electrics being fitted. Inching along!

You saw the Before, now here is DURING. Sadly, I fly out tomorrow and won’t see my completed bathroom project until I return in a month or two. The guys have done amazing work! It’s so incredible to me that I can dream up something in my head, chicken scratch it out for my contractor and two of his men create it for me…BY HAND! 💚🩵💚🩵

Shower walls still need the creamy white cement treatment, glass mosaic tiles go in the niches, shower floor gets tiled and then all gets polished! Then toilet, hardware, lighting, glass partitions, paint and lastly….plants in the “garden”.

Still a hot mess….🥴…but in two weeks I hope to be able to post “Voila”!

Upstairs bathroom tiling project starts Monday. The crew has been laying out the tile in the bedroom to sort (this tile NOT going in the bedroom) Colored pasta tile is going up one feature bathroom wall. The floor shower floor will be tiled in “non-skid” coquina / shell material so I don’t crack my skull while showering! Glass mosaic tile will go in various niches. 💚🩵💚🩵

Last year, with the help of good friends Glenn and Dee, I picked out my two shower appliances and beautiful modern sink faucet…today we’re off to pick up a fancy modern drain (it’s all about the little details for me!) & see if I can make up my mind on a vessel sink. I live for this stuff. ❤️

The crew has been working on a lot of the “un-sexy” parts of the house, but so many have asked about photos…so I’ll share a few here, however unexciting they are. We agonized forever on where to put the utility shed (for water heater & softener, pressure pump, etc.). With such a small house, anywhere we built it at ground level would have taken up valuable garden space. So up on the first story roof it went! Had to punch out a door from the upstairs bathroom for access….and in doing so we will have created a bit more airflow and light. The door will be all glass and we will secure the outer opening with a decorative gate. Mosquito screen netting will cover the gate and decorative breezeblocks. A louvered aluminum door will close in the shed. And now I can have a little rooftop garden if I choose to. The house is now fully piped and plumbed. Next up - tiling the upstairs bathroom (see last photos). Now THAT’S sexy to me!

Not a bad way to spend a work week! I’m with my fabulously talented group who I’ve watched grow for the last four years. They wowed the festival and won with their brilliant rendition of The Addams Family!

Look Ma…no more DIRT!!!

Subfloor in the new part of the house has been laid (ready for my beautiful & colorful tiles, designed by Linda Ricci). Now that I’ve seen better photos, I’ve given the go ahead for the aluminario to come back and frame the perimeter of the top glass in black aluminum (like the photoshopped last photo -thanks again Linda!)

My first window! Woo hoo! 😂

I don’t expect anyone but me to think this is a big deal…but I’m so thrilled with the evolution of the Before & After photos.

The sheer magic of glass! Super excited to resume work on the house. Coming up…closing up the back of the house with a wall of glass. (Photos below are examples of style, not of my actual house)

About 20 feet high. Because the house is on such a narrow lot - I had to choose design elements that opened the space up and really “wowed” the eye. This was the most major part of the overall idea I had in my head…and now it’s coming to fruition. How do you say “PINCH ME!” in Spanish?!? 💃

*the last photo is the closest to what we are doing. Just narrower. Can’t wait to show you MY photos!
