📍Municipal Market of Pyrgos

This is a building built according to reports by German architect Ernesto Chiller around 1890. In the Tower Market, “Stavropazar”, Ziller would build a building that occupies an entire building block. espite its impossibility, the volume of the building operates discreetly, with its atriums and four entrances, open to a neighborhood that was a whole market. The building has no main and secondary aspect, it has four sides in the life of the market, the same processed, using different elements. The structure of the entire building, the variety of elements, the balance between the simple geometry of the classical sections and the Renaissance porch and the arches make this project one of the most remarkable creations. It was used as a market until the 1960’s when its use was abandoned.

The building was renovated and turned into a museum that adorns the city of Pyrgos and opened its gates to the public on July 16th, 2013. It is a two-storey building, neoclassical style and is the most prestigious building in the city. In Karaiskaki Street, the Renaissance figures are strongly, in Metaxa Street, the building faces administrative buildings and the style is strict and simple. At Kresteniti street the Municipal Market is in direct correspondence with the opposite buildings and shares their style of decoration and decoration. On the fourth and last face, located on Petralia Street, the slope of the terrain limits the possibilities for a particular decoration. On the fourth and last face, located on Petralia Street, the slope of the terrain limits the possibilities for a particular decoration. At this point, one can feel the traditional breeze of the old Municipal Market of the Tower, which today has been enriched with a modern style, without altering its picturesqueness. In the area today, there are small shops that are harmoniously integrated into the wider architectural environment and several art exhibitions and other events of cultural interest are regularly organised on the picturesque pedestrian street.

Today in this building operates Arcaeological Museum of Pyrgos

📍Kafkalida Lighthouse in Killini

The lighthouse on the island of Kafkalidas, at the westernmost point of the Peloponnese in the Ionian Sea, located just outside Killini, against the background of Mount Aenos, was built in 1906 with a tower height of 15 meters and a focal height of 19 meters. Traditionally, the island was connected to the land with a strip of land. On the small island there are Roman tombs and the ruins of an Early Christian temple. Today you go by boat or cliff-rock (reefs). It is a remarkable example of a building of historical and technical interest, important for the history of communications and navigation. It is made of masonry and reinforced concrete elements and includes the tower of the lighthouse and the housekeeper’s residence. The rocky islet “Kaikalidas” has a height from the sea of 5.5 meters and there are some tenths of the nautical mile – as it is characteristically mentioned – from the northwest boundary of the extreme Glarzha to which it joins with shallow rocks and rocks on the surface of the sea. On the rocky island there are ruins of an ancient temple.

📍Marathia in Ilida Municipality

The beach of Marathias, which is a continuation of Kouroutas beach, can be enjoyed by one of the most “wild” coastal forests that has dense pine vegetation. Here you can enjoy the Greek sun, the most beautiful sandy beach and the spot is ideal for peaceful and relaxing moments. Those who love this summer’s calm surely the beach of Marathias will fix you. 📍Katakolo Port

Katakolo is only a few kilometers from Pyrgos and is the home of the shipowner Ioannis Latsis (1910 – 2003). It reminds of a beautiful and picturesque island, so it is characterized by those who visit it and those who arrive at its harbor, enjoying its beauty. During the summer months, it is flooded by a large number of visitors, as there are hundreds of cruise ships approaching and doing so in Greece along with those of Piraeus and Mykonos in this area, except those that traditionally spend their holidays there. Katakolo of ancient times is located in the area of Ancient Phoea, a town located on the beach of today’s Saint Andreas. A walk in the alleys and narrow streets of the village is an antidote to the routine of everyday life. As you pass through the small, charming and traditional shops of Katakolo, it feels like it is in the best neighborhood of the world.
The first thing that will impress you by reaching the Port of Katakolo, is the natural beauty of the area. The Port operated in the golden age of the black raisin – the production of which Ilia is famous – and this activity “lived” all over the region. Nowadays the old warehouses have turned into colorful and buzzing shops and taverns that “embrace” the coastal road, while the harbor nowadays constitutes the main tourist gate of Ilia, through the cruise ships that approach it from every corner of the globe throughout during the year, but especially during the summer, to Ancient Olympia.

📍The municipality of Pyrgos was established after the merging of the pre-existing municipalities of Pyrgos, Olena, Volax and Iardanos. It is the administrative and business capital lying 12 km from the port of Katakolo. Pyrgos is a modern city which is continually developing. It does though still maintain traditional neighborhoods and restored old buildings that lend to prove the historic significance of the town.

📍 Archaeological site of Ancient Olympia

It is one of the most important sanctuaries of antiquity, dedicated to the father of Gods, Olympius Zeus. Ancient Olympia is the place where the Olympic Games were born and held every four years in honor of Jupiter (776 BC), an institution with Pan-Hellenic radiation and glamor from antiquity to the present day. The Sanctuary of Olympia, lies at the southern foothills of Kronion Lofos, at the confluence of the rivers Alfeios and Kladeos. This valley which is located between the two rivers, in ancient times was overgrown with wild trees, poplars, oaks, pines and plane trees, so the sanctuary was named Altis. The archaeological site of Olympia is one of those places where their history causes awe and emotion. Olympia is a station and a starting point for all mankind over the centuries. The “Valley of the Gods” has not been randomly classified.
As it is known, the archaeological site of Olympia includes the sanctuary of Zeus, with temples and buildings directly related to worship and various buildings built around it, such as sports facilities used to prepare and perform the Olympic Games, auxiliary buildings, utilitarian and administrative, as well as secular buildings. Altis, the sacred grove, occupies the central part and within it the core of the sanctuary, with the temples, the treasures and the most important buildings of the area, are developed. It is separated from the surrounding area by a precinct, which at the end of the 4th c. B.C. had two gates on its western side and one on the south, while its boundary to the east is the Stoa of Echos, which separates the sacred space from the stadium. In the Roman period, the enclosure widened and on its western side two monumental propels were formed.

📍Chlemoutsi Castle (Castel Tornese) in Killini

Chlemoutsi Castle (Castel Tornese) is a symbol of beauty and power that offers immense views of the Ionian Sea. It is the stationary “guard” of the Ionian Sea, built in 1227 by the Franks, with the last owner being the Byzantine Emperor, Constantine Palaiologos. Being built on top of a hill, it dominates the plain of Ilia and its original name, according to historical sources, was Clermont, which in Greek was then translated into Chlemoutsi. The castle remained in use until the Hellenic Revolution of 1821, passing by the hands of the Turks (1460-1687, 1715-1821) and the Venetians (1687-1715). Today Chlemoutsi Castle, where its original form did not undergo any significant subsequent interventions, keeps its Frankish character strong. Of the later conquerors, only the Turks seem to have been interested in modernizing it and have done little work mainly to adapt to the use of fi****ms. Thus, the Castle remains one of the most important and well-preserved fortresses of Greece and is an excellent example of the Franco-era architecture of the Peloponnese.
