POSTCARD FROM PORTUGAL • Quinta da Regaleira is a historic estate set within the World Heritage Site of Sintra, known for its elaborate gardens and mystical architectural elements.

Walking around the beautiful grounds there are various follies to explore, including the Initiation Well, perhaps one of the most famous attractions in all of Sintra.

Its mysterious design, without any clear purpose, is a source of fascination. Looking up from the bottom of the well at the circular patch of sky above, it looks like a tower built into the ground. But in reality, this tower is more symbolic than utilitarian. Carvalho Monteiro, a notable Free Mason, had built it for spiritual reasons.

POSTCARD FROM PORTUGAL • The traditional Alentejo chimney is long, rectangular and white washed - its size usually represented the social status of who ordered it to be built.

Inside the building, the chimney gives way to a large open fireplace with a surrounding seating area - this is where the family would gather to kept warm during the cold winter months but it was also the smoke room of the house - over the embers, sticks were used to hang and smoke sausages.

PORTUGUESE FOOD & WINE • The sun-drenched Alentejo region in southern Portugal boasts wines that will surprise you for their excellence, as well as their value for money. The white wines are aromatic and fresh whilst the red wines are more intense and full-bodied.

We recently visited , where despite some modernization, work rhythms remain largely unaltered since the late XIX century: grapes are hand-picked and crushing continues to be done by foot, then pressed in manual ancient basket presses, which produce low yields of the highest quality.

As well as table wines Mouchão produces a selection of fortified wines, olive oil and wild honey, all of which you can buy from the shop.

Fun Fact: The “vinha da dourada” vineyard you can see (last picture), already appears on a 1894 site map of the estate.

Once made by skilled masons and each unique in its design, they are a reminder of the Arabic influence in the region, even though they first appeared in the 19th century long after the moors disappeared.

Many modern houses of today will feature similar styles, but these are now mass-produced, and it is hard to find anyone skilled enough to build an original chimney.

It was a cloudy day when we visited Lagoa das Sete Cidades but it was still extraordinarily beautiful, don’t you think?!
