BrownGirlsFly Celebrating Women-of-Color Who Travel ... thru travel narratives, destination profiles, cultural stories, traveler interviews, tips/tricks & travel deals.

BGF is for everyone — regardless of age, gender, cultural background, or locale — and the majority of our content is focused on universal themes like travel inspiration, packing tips, stylish gear and great stories. But, we also happen to be American women-of-color who have often wondered why we don’t encounter more people who look like us on the road. Maybe it’s limited funding or a cultural pref

erence for locales like the Caribbean and Africa. Or maybe it’s simply fear. Who knows? Whichever the case, we’d like to give an extra dose of encouragement to all the brown girls (and brown boys) out there. So, some portion of our content will serve that purpose. But, travel has a way of breaking barriers, broadening perspectives, and deepening understanding. So, whoever you are, regardless of your background, we’d love for you to join us in the discourse.

Yeesssss! One more reason to love VerySmartBrothas.com from another window-seat loving pre-planner.

One time I orchestrated a 4 seat swap on an international flight. I ended up with the window I wanted, a man got to sit with his wife, and another man got a net-neutral switch. Every body was happy. If it doesn't end up like that, I won't play with you in these window-seat streets.

How about you?

I do plenty of good deeds! Just not that.

We are saddened, angered and frustrated by the recent attacks against the Asian community, most recently the mass shootings in Atlanta.

The increasing xenophobia, racism, and toxic masculinity happening in the world right now is not ok. We are praying for the impacted families, sending our love and support to the broader AAPI community, and will continue to amplify the need for change.

This is a great behind-the-scenes with Dr. Rae Wynn-Grant, an ecologist focused on large carnivores (including bears and lions) who's currently a fellow at Nat Geo Society.

It was awesome to hear how a study abroad experience in Kenya shaped her journey from a self-proclaimed "city girl" to working in wild ecosystems across the US/world.

And, the closing panel with 3 other black women researchers -- talking tips on photographing elusive animals, how they're supporting each other, and how they're changing the field -- was so inspiring.

Not sure why this host thought asking "Which monkey is going to stay on the couch" was going to end well for her. Glad to see Airbnb taking their inclusion policies seriously.

Airbnb has banned a host in New York after a video of her berating guests and yelling racial slurs at them went viral over the weekend. The video shows the host, who is identified as Kate on the platform — yelling at five guests and telling them to leave. The two sides argued and the back and fort...

A deeply honest account of how "real life" responsibilities and others' expectations stood in the way of her longtime dream.

"...I’m turning 60 soon and I’m taking my gap year. The kids are grown and the sun is calling. I’m going to sail through the Panama Canal, around Madagascar, and up the Mediterranean. Then I’ll go who knows where else.

I used to regret not having done it sooner but not anymore. I left all my regrets on that gritty beach in Baja. Besides, anguish weighs more than you think. It’s better to cast it into the sea and use the space in my pack for an extra bottle of Glenmorangie."

We're cheering for you Kay! Spread your wings and fly, Girl, fly!!

After a lifetime of motherhood and service, I’m finally letting go of my obligations and sailing around the world. The kids are grown and the sun is calling. I’m ready to live my own story.

Despite the film's weak depiction of the importance of the Green Book, it touched so many lives.

On its first page, the Green Book states it's mission: “ … to give the Negro traveler information that will keep him from running into difficulties, embarrassments and to make his trips more enjoyable.”

Crystal and I once traced the lingering artifacts of the Green Book down into New Orleans. And in years since, our Mother, a native North Carolinian recounted the terror she experienced driving through the South at night in the late 60s.

The value of a resource like the Green Book is undeniable. And, now that I live in Seattle, seeing it's local impact is even more meaningful.

Have you or someone you know experienced the benefits of Victor Hugo Green's creation?

The Green Book was a kind of AAA Travel Guide for blacks who sought lodging, food or any of the services that whites could take for granted in the days before the 1964 Civil Rights Act.
