Winter has temporarily returned to Tongariro National Park! There is snow on the ground and temperatures have dropped below zero. This unseasonal weather is set to last a few days.

If you’re planning an alpine trip like the Tongariro Alpine Crossing this weekend, you’ll need alpine skills, equipment and warm and waterproof clothing. The weather forecast is for cold, wet, cloudy conditions with poor visibility. The Taranaki Falls Track is a great alternative to the alpine hikes when conditions are poor.

Visit www.doc.govt.nz/tongariro to plan your trip and select the right destination for your fitness and experience level. Check the NIWA forecast - https://bit.ly/3AEQZEI - before heading out, and don’t hesitate to turn-back if things aren’t going well.

Make sure you have a memorable trip for the right reasons and get home safely.
