Woodworking hand tool user and collector Michael Toivonen will be the host of a hand tool happy hour at The Highland Woodshop on Friday January 24 between 5 & 8 pm. This event is open to the general public as well as Highland Woodshop members. We request a $10 donation from non members to help cover Highland’s overhead.

Hand Tool Happy Hour at Highland With Michael Toivonen

Woodworking hand tool user and collector Michael Toivonen will be the host of a hand tool happy hour at The Highland Woodshop on Friday January 24 between 5 & 8 pm. This event is open to the general public as well as Highland Woodshop.

Between all the hand tools available at Highland, combined with those currently available for purchase new and the many that are no longer in production but that can be found on eBay and elsewhere it can feel a bit overwhelming. Hand Tool Happy Hour will be a casual get together where you can get a better sense of the range of handle tools and what they can do. 

Besides bringing along tools from his collection to put through their paces Michael will be available to take your questions about hand tool use, maintenance, identification and history.

We had such a wonderful time wrapping up the laminated fishing net class. .construction Mike Pemberton taught his first class with us and blew everyone away with his skill and welcoming teaching style. and her wife Marcía were in the class making some holiday gifts for family. We have three more classes coming up in December its not too late to register for them to make some gifts for friends and family!

When you are too old for social media but you own two small businesses and you realize you have no choice. So you buy a tripod from amazon that holds your phone. But the first three times you use it you accidentally call emergency services because the tripod hits both buttons at once. But now you know if you fall and cant get up, you can just put your phone in the tripod to call for help. Am I doing it right?

We built things, bashed things and burned things last night. The best part for me was the people we’d never met who just showed up: LOVELY people, investing in community with social bravery and delicious cookies. We sat next to each other building tiny fires around the huge fire pit that eventually merged into one. Kids bashed printers but the adults weren’t interested in that. We wanted to connect. We talked about how we were doing and then we just shared who we are and where we come from. Thanks for connecting with me over social media too, far away friends❤️. Sending love and a wish for your well being❤️

Friends, Kat and I are super excited about this landing net class that begins next week. At first when we listed the class I was like, wow, beautiful build, awesome skills to build but I have no use for a landing net??!! And then I realized I know two fisherpeople who I’d love to gift something for Christmas!! They’d love this! Kat had the same process…so we’ll both be there! The class still has a few more openings and we’re pretty solid that someone else will realize they want to take this class with Mike! Check out the website for registration!

Meet Mike Pemberton! Mike is an artist, contractor, angler, climber and a super kind human. We're really excited to have him in our community and to have him teaching a class for us is some icing on the cake! Many of us non-anglers are really excited to take this class and gift these gorgeous landing nets to the anglers in our lives while we learn the skill of bent lamination. Double win! We hope you'll join us!

Thank you for coming out to check out the shop and celebrate our 5th Birthday! It was such a great (exhausting) day! We had a great turn out! 50+ people stopped by throughout the day and brought their moms, dads, brothers, partners, neighbors and friends. Old friends/members came all the way from Portland and current member volunteers helped us out Immensely!! Wood burning and hand planing were all the rage and our new sign looks beautiful! (We never made the pic big table😬).

The bonfire was so chill and the chili was FIERY! Happy Birthday Highland Woodshop! I’m so grateful for this community and for so many opportunities to !!!

We got to team up with today and host a Mason bee house making class. Aren’t they cute?!

These little native pollinators come out in early spring, when honey bees are still hibernating, and pollinate your early flowering orchard. They nearly doubled our fruit yield the first year we added them to our homestead!

This project is near and dear to my heart because my friend and neighbor, Jerry Paul started a Mason Bee hosting program through , spending countless hours installing bee houses and cleaning out thousands of cocoons every fall. He passed away last July and so did his program. We’re hoping to pick up a small portion of his baton by hosting these classes as well as community hive cleanings for anyone to attend. We depend on our bee populations y’all. Here’s to you Jerry, who knew that so very well!
