with stop on my Sierra Foothills Wine Trip is at in Plymouth. Steve Havill was my inspiration for making this trip to a wine region that's new to me. Since 2006, the Havill family produces many fine varietals that I have had in the past. Met with Steve who toured us around the caves at the vineyards. Steve's father, Charlie, works the ground, and his mother, Michael, is the winemaker. Tasted through Tempranillo, zinfandel, barbera, reserve barbera, reserve petite sirah along with a Sonoma Coast pinot noir. Showing best to me were the barbera and Tempranillo. It's Tempranillo Tuesday with tongue out action!! Opened this 2014 tempranillo from the Shake Ridge Ranch vineyard in Amador County. This is the initial vintage of this varietal from this vineyard by owner/winemaker Jeff Runquist. A nose of strawberry blossom, dark chocolate and violets is followed with mouth coating tastes of mocha, ironstone mineral and spicy blackberry. Heading up to the Sierra Foothills next weekend and plan on stopping in at Runquist to taste the rest of the lineup. #2014

Though these wines are known for their assertive blockbuster style, subtler expressions of them can be compelling.
