A few weeks ago I shared a video that included otters going after coyotes and then coyotes chasing coyotes. This photo is one of many as one coyote was set on stealing fish remains that were originally stolen from an otter.

It was a special day in Yellowstone. I had a group that really wanted to see wolves and our perseverance paid off. We were able to see 9 different wolves today. Not to mention we saw 6 foxes, 4 coyotes, and a couple large herds of bison. See Yellowstone Phone Skope

This last Thursday seemed like the day that just kept giving. In my 12 years I have never had a day with wolves quite like this one. We may not have had as many photo opportunities as I would have liked. That was mostly due to wolves being to close which means we cant get out of the vehicle to get photos.

It is always awesome to get photos in an environment that represents Yellowstone.

Seeing 20 wolves together at one time is always incredible! This was not my first time seeing this many and I am sure it wont be the last.

It has been a couple crazy days in Yellowstone. Yesterday we spent about an hour with wolves today we were with them all day. We had a high count of 21 from the Wapiti Lake Pack. Pictured here is the alpha female.

Can you see them? Yesterday on tour we had an awesome experience watching a couple of otters. We started with them below Firehole Falls with a fish and soon they started making their way down the canyon. Only thing is they did not want to follow the river, I assume due to the rough water. At two different locations they climbed up the rocks to avoid the rough water before making their way back down to the river.

Have you ever seen an owl in your neighborhood? Owls are probably a lot more common than you might think. This Great Gray Owl is common where I live and I have seen them in my neighborhood. The Great Gray is pretty obvious but other owls can be small enough to nest in an old woodpecker hole.

Day 16, today is a drive up to the airport to drop everyone off then head home.

I want to thank and for giving me the opportunity to guide these trips every year. I look forward to next year. Thanks to (Brock Wilson) for being our snow coach driver he has been great to work with.

This short video was taken hand held from the window of the coach. We had hoped to pull into this pull out so we could view the wolves but this wolf decided it also wanted to use the pullout. After this video was taken we drove on to the next pullout to get out at a safe distance to view/photograph the wolves.

Day 15, our last day in Yellowstone and we had our grand finale. We went as fast as we could to Hayden Valley, today we were the first ones in. As we came up a hill I noticed a couple bison and mentioned they could be good to photograph. About that time I noticed more dark objects below and after saying more bison I knew I was wrong.

We found a pull out and watched 19 wolves, some moving away others making their way across a ridgeline towards the road. It was an incredible opportunity but also a little chaotic, as more coaches came and joined us. I have some really neat shots I will be sharing in the future, not all are the sharpest as shooting out a window from a warm vehicle into negative temps has a way of softening photos.

After the wolves we went through Hayden a couple times not seeing a whole lot. We made another trip to Lookout Point today to get a better look at the Canyon. After making another run through Hayden Valley we found a couple coyotes who found a place to take a nap.

On our way out we saw a fox in Gibbon meadows pretty far out. A few bald eagles and we spent some time with swans along the Madison River.

It has been a great couple weeks but I cant wait to be home tomorrow.

Day 14, off to Hayden Valley first thing this morning. Before we got to Hayden we found wolf tracks along the road which seemed promising but did not lead to any sightings. We then just missed otters that had been out at the same are we saw them last week. We did manage to photograph the “famous” Bald Eagle by Mud Volcano.

Hayden Valley was pretty void of any activity outside some distant bison and some waterfowl. After stopping at Mud Volcano and Lookout Point for a couple landscape shots we decided to head towards the Gibbon.

Moving across the park was a good idea as we located a fox, although a little distant it made for some great environmental shots. Further up the Gibbon River we saw a group that had stopped for another fox which was a bit shy and with the heavy snowfall made it difficult to photograph. We decided to stick it out after everyone else left and the snow stopped and the fox came out.

On the way out along the Madison River we had our best bison encounter of the week. A cow bison was alone on our side of the river with a snow covered face. It started out lightly snowing then picked up quite a bit. Deciding to be a little creative I took photos at all kinds of shutter speeds. The first of the two posted here was at 1/800 sec and the second at 1/8 sec.

With the final minutes of the day we had a great encounter with a coyote along the Madison.

Tomorrow is the final day before we depart for the airport. We all have our fingers crossed that Yellowstone has a grand finale for us.

Day 13, it was about -9 F to start the morning out. With the cold temperatures and blue skies we started the day going towards Old Faithful. The idea was we would spend part of the day photographing landscapes then move on to wildlife.

Our landscapes today consisted of the Bobby-sock Trees, Old Faithful, Norris Geyser Basin, and Duck Rock. I was excited to photograph Duck Rock as I have never been down to it in the winter time and it was a pretty easy climb down and back up. If you are not familiar with Duck Rock take a look at photo #3.

With the cold temps there is always a chance at frosty bison and we had some frosty ones today. Actually in general we saw a lot of bison today and had more opportunities photographing them today than the last three days.

We did see two foxes today, both at a distance but they made for some fun shots. We also spent a little time with a coyote, Chickadees, and a Bald Eagle.

Tomorrow we head into Hayden Valley.

Day 12, today we moved to West Yellowstone to prepare for the coach ride the next three days. Before we left for West we spent a half day out on the northern range. With fresh snow we were looking for some snowy bison on the way in. We did stop for one snowy bull. Knowing bison opportunities should be plentiful on the interior I was trying to push through for a chance at the otters, fox, and moose.

We had a pretty good session with 7 moose, two of which still had their antlers. One of those two seemed like a pretty nice bull for Yellowstone. After the moose we went in to Cooke City and found a couple foxes. As a note the Cooke City foxes are pretty habituated. But if you have never had an encounter with a fox this is a pretty good way to see one. Our fingers are crossed to have some better experience with foxes the next couple days.

On the way back out we had a glimpse of an otter who was still playing shy. We had our best bison encounter as a small herd was moving along the road next to a pullout. And at the last minute we found a couple bighorn sheep that have been missing the last couple days.

Day 11, on our way into Yellowstone today we saw lots of bison and elk along the road. It was just a little too dark to stop and take any photos, our fingers were crossed they would be in the same areas on the way out.

Our goals today included a fox, otters, and moose. We had a great photoshoot with a couple moose. Not to mention the little walk out to them was nice to get our blood pumping and toes warm. The fox did not pan out despite a couple tries. We did see an otter although it was a little too shy to come out on the ice. It stayed well away from the road in a little section of open water.

The afternoon was a little slow, all the bison we were hoping for had moved out of the areas we saw them in the morning. Then we struck out on a few other species we went looking for. At one stop I did notice a flock of about 20 Mountain Chickadees that entertained us for a minute or two before they moved off.

Day 10, it was cold today! Most the day the temp was between -20 and -14 it never got above 0. Actually it was cold enough the drinks froze in the van and my computer is too cold to start.

Due to the computer not starting I am sharing a moose photo from last week. Today we started with a bull elk, although he was laying down in tall grass and was too hard to shoot. Soon after we had another bull elk in beautiful light but he was a little skittish and took off.

We took a little walk that awarded us with 6 moose, this probably ended up being our best experience of the day. Although some of the participant’s may argue for the Pygmy Owl sighting. Many of them were looking forward to seeing one and we did, it was pretty high up but when it is your first Pygmy Owl who cares where it is at.

We ended the day on the old Gardiner road with a herd of pronghorn, a lone coyote, and got a glimpse of some bighorn sheep pretty far off.

Day one was pretty good, looking forward to day two.

Day 9, today I dropped the first group off and will be meeting the second group for dinner tonight. I started going through some photos while sitting in the hotel and thought these would be a fun sequence to share.

Two days ago (day 7) I shared a video of an incredible encounter with otters and coyotes along the Yellowstone River. Basically as soon as an otter pulled a fish from the river three coyotes showed up and tried to steal the fish. The coyotes ran back and forth around the open water as the otters moved from one place to another. It seemed as though the otters were teasing the coyotes.

It was a great week with
