Bust of Nefertiti

The bust of Queen Nefertiti housed in Berlin’s Neues Museum is one of Ancient Egypt’s most famous works of art. A prime example of ancient artistry, this icon has been called “the most beautiful woman in the world”. Hypnotizing audiences since it went on display in 1923, the statue gives insight into the enigmatic queen and continues to generate controversy and debate in art and politics.

Nefertiti’s bust is the sole work of art in the dimly lit room. She stands 48 cm (19 inches) tall and weighs 20 kg (44 lbs). Positioned slightly above eye level, the viewer gazes up at her, contributing to the power and regal feeling of the piece. The statue is delicate, elegant and very symmetrical with a visual flow guiding you from the top of the crown down to the long neck. The naturalism differs from earlier more formal and rigid Egyptian art.

The estimated date of the statue’s creation is 1345 BC during the Amarna Period. There are no inscriptions, but Nefertiti was identified by her trademark blue flat-top crown with the uraeus (rearing cobra), which is missing. The core is limestone covered with plaster, which allowed for the exception molding and detail around the face.

The Goddess Ma'at, Tomb of Queen Nefertari

Ma'at was a symbol in Egyptian mythology of truth, order, law, morality and justice. This painting of Ma'at is found in the Tomb of Queen Nefertari (QV66) above the entrance to the burial chamber.

Queen Nefertari Meritmut lived around 1300-1255 BC and was the first wife of the pharaoh Ramesses II. The tomb was rediscovered in 1904 by the Italian archaeologist Ernesto Schiaparelli. It is located in the Valley of the Queens, near the ancient city of Thebes. It is one of the best preserved and most ornate of all known tombs.

The Unfinished Head of Nefertiti

The unfinished brown quartzite head of Queen Nefertiti, the beautiful wife of King Akhenaten was part of a composite statue. Each element was sculpted separately to be later assembled into one statue.

As it remained unfinished, the head retained the guiding lines of the sculptor: the eyebrows were marked with brown and the eyes with black. Like the rest of Akhenaten’s family, the head portrayed the queen according to the Amarna style of art.

Nefertiti’s oval face reflected the sensibility and grace of a woman of great spirit. The eyebrows were elongated naturally towards the temples, projecting supercilious arches and cheekbones. The eyes were half-dimmed by the slightly downcast eyelids. The shape of her mouth hinted a mysterious quality. All of these features, which were rendered with harmonious proportions, created a beautiful portrait of the queen.

Very rare beautiful statue.

Statue of King Thutmose III

This gray schist statue depicts King Thutmose III, who regained his throne after 20 years of struggle with his aunt and stepmother, Queen Hatshepsut. The queen usurped his right to the throne of Egypt after the death of his father, her husband King Thutmose II.

The statue represents Thutmose III as a great athletic warrior king. The “nine-bows,” which refer to the traditional foes of Egypt, are depicted below the king’s feet. According to the inscriptions on the base, this statue was part of a group of fine sculptures that decorated the rooms of the Festival Hall of Thutmose III (Akh-menu) at Karnak.
