Nyika National Park is always amazing.

Nyika National Park was Malawi’s first certified park, founded in 1965. It is also the biggest of all the national parks in the country with no less than 3200km2 of beautiful, rolling scenery. Nyika Plateau is situated in the North of Malawi and is unique in Africa. The Plateau is on the UNESCO World Heritage tentative list for its cultural and natural beauty.

As you drive between Mangochi and Monkey Bay, the scenery unfolds like a living postcard—untamed, breathtaking, and deeply serene. The road winds through rolling hills, flanked by towering baobab trees surrounded by the greens. Malawi has some of the beautiful landscapes and scenery.

Tea picking in Malawi is a vibrant and essential part of the country’s agricultural landscape. The lush tea estates are mainly concentrated in the southern region, particularly in the Thyolo and Mulanje districts, which are known for their rolling green hills and temperate climate, ideal for tea cultivation.

Every day at dawn, the fields come alive with tea pickers, who skillfully pluck the tender leaves by hand. These workers, move in rhythmic unison, filling their woven baskets with the prized leaves that will eventually be processed into Malawi's distinct black and green teas. The work is labor-intensive and requires not just dexterity but also knowledge passed down through generations to ensure that only the youngest, most flavorful leaves are selected.

Tea production in Malawi dates back to the late 19th century, making the country one of the oldest tea producers in Africa.

Despite the challenges, tea picking is intertwined with the culture and identity of local communities. It is common to hear songs and stories shared among the workers, adding a sense of unity and resilience. The vivid green fields, framed by the dramatic backdrop of Mount Mulanje or the rolling Shire Highlands, create scenes of serene beauty that contrast with the hard labor it takes to sustain this centuries-old industry.

Reasons To Visit Liwonde National Park

Some of the best river-based elephant, crocodile, hippo and general wildlife viewing in Africa.

Home to the rare and critically endangered black rhino as well as the historic elephant translocation.

Experience the cathedral-like mopane woodlands interspersed with candelabra euphorbia with good populations of buffalo and sable antelope.

The amazing views of Borassus palm-studded floodplains.
Finally, a bird watcher’s delight with easy viewing of Pel’s fishing owl, Boehm’s bee-eaters, Lilian’s lovebirds, and Livingstone’s flycatcher.

The ideal time to visit the park is during the dry season from April to October. During this time, the bush is dry and open, making game easier to spot.
Liwonde National Park is open from 06h00 to 18h00.
