Savoring the light before we sink into the season of darkness and hibernation. The changing of seasons always brings me conflicting feelings of sadness for leaving behind what has been and excitement for what is to come.

I do not have a cozy indoor facility to work out of in the winter. We bundle up and find resilience in the harsh weather and joy in the beauty of discomfort.

That's not to say that it is easy and I don't grumble and wish for a bit more comfort and ease when the wind is blowing sleet sideways into my face and my hands are numb.

But at least for now, I have this moment of rainbows and unicorns. 🌈 🦄

The sky was incredible during morning chores. I am absolutely grateful for my morning and evening chores so that I can take a few moments to pause from my crazy days and just take in the beauty around me
It is so easy to just put your head down, nose to the ground stone of daily life. I am the first to admit that I fall into that trap and spend too much time running through scenarios in my head.
Bookending my day with a few moments to find beauty and awe around me is a small thing that is essential to my mental health.
Now I need to find a few more moments throughout the day!

Casper and I have learned how to hold space for each other over the years together. This friendship has been built through trust and learning how to "read" the other's energy.
He gives me strength through his presence but also inevitably reminds me to not let life be too serious.

I was sitting on the salt block thinking about things while waiting for the water tank to fill. He came over and supported me energetically while I processed some thoughts. Then he said "enough!"
He took a drink and then dribbled water on my head.

Thanks for everything buddy

Can you spot the pony? He is living his best life at the moment. Hidden from view and just doing his thing.
He was happy to pop up and say hi, then go back to his peaceful browsing away from view.

A good reminder that we don't need to put everything on view for others and that we can disappear for peace. Goals are still being realized, just not in the spotlight.

Sometimes new DO need to have our goals in the spotlight, especially if we need accountability and support, but often times we can get derailed if we look too much for outside validation and motivation.

I am always striving to build my internal motivation to set and achieve goals so that I can disappear into a peaceful place.

Resting with the herd. One by one, they all laid down.

I was checking on the herd to make sure I didn't need to reapply fly spray or put on fly masks.
I was delighted to see that Ivy was resting as she can have a hard time with this. She allowed me to sit with her for a while and just breathe. A few minutes later, Casper laid down, and then one by one, they all laid down.
Each horse spent a different amount of time resting. Some rolled. Some laid flat out for a while.
After about 20 minutes, everyone was back up and grazing.

It was an honor to be a part of the group chill and I felt grounded, relaxed, and clear minded as I moved on with my morning.

Tuning fork therapy sessions for some stunning dressage horses at Steiner Dressage in Loxahatchee, FL

Swiss is a very expressive mare who told me exactly where she wanted me to work. I was able to do 2 sessions with her last week.
The first session, I worked on her lymph system behind her poll as well as her hyoids.
The second session, she had me work on her left temporalis muscle (just above the eye), her left bracio/pectoral as well as her girth area on both sides which was incredible as she is known to be very sensitive in that area.
Stan told me to work on his gelding scar and right hamstring.
I am so glad my mom took a picture of his goofy faces while I worked on him.
I really enjoy bringing some softness and healing to horses, even though I was "working" on my vacation

Unexpected training opportunity this morning.

This was my second ever ride on Chili. We were doing our first trot of the session and this combine came over the hill behind us.
We both looked over our shoulder to look at it with curiosity. "What's that? Oh, a combine." Instead of "WHAT IS THAT???? IT'S GOING TO KILL ME!!!!"
We stopped and looked at it for a bit while doing a few rounds of breath work. And then it was just a thing that came and went over the course of our ride.
When we feel safe in each other's presence, and can both self regulate and congratulate our heart and breath, life becomes so much easier.
Taking the time to develop a solid foundation pays off in dividends over time

Post ride softness...

I asked him if he would support me while I hopped on ba****ck to test my knee after being kicked by a struggling horse a few weeks ago.

He graciously carried me around the arena while I focused on my body.

I wasn't sure if going faster than a walk was a good idea and he agreed so after walking for a while we hung out in the middle while I told him my worries, doubts, and fears.

He supported me physically and emotionally with a quiet strength quite different from his normal mischievous ways. It was a wonderful gift from a special horse.

I watched him become the herd leader this summer for the first time since coming here 9 years ago and he is bringing that leadership into our human horse relationship.

I just love hanging out with the horses beyond the basics of tacking up and riding. The deep connection we forge is life changing.

I am please to announce that Wyn is now officially a Fiedler. For the past 2.5 years I have been stealing him from Lin to use in lessons and camps.
It was time for him to become a forever part of the family.
So yeah, I basically bought myself a pony for my birthday.

Lunar just has to be a part of EVERYTHING!
He stayed on my shoulder the whole time I worked with Ivy. I won't be surprised if he stays on while I ride some time.
Although I do appreciate the warmth on these chilly days.

Healing with the herd this morning.

A beautiful sun rising through the fog after a rainy day gives me hope for the future.

My wish is for peace and healing all over the world. I know that is a naive and overly positive outlook but the alternative to that hope is to terrible to dwell on.

Greed, jealousy, election years (yes, I said it), ancestral cycles of war and revenge are playing out throughout our world. No easy or one answer to bring about peace...

I am in a position where I am able to work on healing myself from the above afflictions so that is what I will do on the daily and hope that I can have a positive influence on the small circle around me, causing a ripple effect.

My heart is full yet again after completing another program with Enabling Explorers.

My volunteers and horses help create magic moments for kids and parents. They really do help enable the kids to explore movement and emotion in a novel way.

Each week, we were blown away by the confidence and abilities of these special kids.

Thank you to my volunteers, horses, Gritman Therapy Solutions, Enabling Explorers, and Avista for the grant to make this possible

Last week I looked at a mare to potentially purchase. I immediately noticed the stringiness alongside muscle atrophy in her hip/stifle area.

When she moved, she was noticably tight on the left hind. No heat or swelling to indicate Inflammation in any joints so I thought it was soft tissue.
As I am deciding if I want to move ahead and try to "fix" this, I am watching if she warms up out of it or if it gets worse. Her shortened stride on the left never changed. Although she did fall out of the stride on that leg twice, once on the lunge and once under saddle.

I have had enough experience rehabbing horses to know that this will be a years long process and she may never fully recover, all from being pushed too hard, too fast from an early age. She was a former race horse.

I sadly decided to walk away and continue my search for a horse that is not quite so compromised. Sadly, this type of muscling is quite common. Once you know what to look for, you will be shocked at how often you see it.

Let's do better for our horses and take it slow and steady, especially in the early years.

Keep learning every day.

A return to the herd

I have been barely able to spend time with the horses for the last two weeks due to being ill. I have had minimal direct contact with them but they were always peeking into the yard to catch my eye as I dozed in and out of sleep.

The last two days, I have finally felt well enough to spend some time with them. They all sniffed my whole body gently, finishing with a few moments of sharing breathe. It felt so sweet, welcoming, and completely non-judgemental. I never felt like they were "mad" at me for not being around.

Yesterday, Casper stood watch over me for an hour while I sat with the herd.

Today, he spent quite a bit of time nuzzling.my neck and just keeping his whiskers touching me.

These horses are so special to me. I am forever grateful for them in my life.

My humans and other animals are also quite indespensible 😜

Good morning beautiful souls. Let the sun pour into your cells and fill you with joy and vibrancy.

Then put on your sunscreen and slay the day.

Morning sun (and horses) helps set you up with a good dose of Vitamin D, reduces cortisol levels, and boosts your mood with elevated levels of serotonin.

A new experience at Shady Grove. A bridge that can also turn into a teeter totter.
This bridge teaches trust over new footing, accuracy in placing your horse, balance, and some good psoas stretches.
Thank you to Jennifer and James for building it. Ivy got the inaugural crossing.
Magpie didn't know what the big deal was and was wondering why I was taking her picture.
I didn't get a picture but Casper also just walked right over it both being led and under saddle.

Best laid plans of mice and men-

Most of us buy or acquire a horse for a purpose- to show, to develop for a specific purpose, for a project to fulfill some need in us. Whether we admit to ourselves or not, whether we’re aware or not, we are usually driven to horses for some purpose, and we have some ideas about how the future will go together.

There’s a saying, “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” We get a lame horse when we wanted to compete- a horse who doesn’t excel at our discipline, a road block, a question with no answer, a problem to be solved, and our plans are derailed.

I really believe that horses are part of a universal plan to aid in the development of human consciousness- that we get the lesson we need to learn, until we learn it.

I believe horses come into our lives to teach us what we struggle most with: patience, flexibility, humility, awareness, open mindedness. I believe when we get set on a philosophy, we find a horse in our lives that doesn’t fit the box. They didn’t read the manual, and they are here to teach us, if we’re open to it.
