The new visa rules, which apply to both American and Canadian travelers, went into effect at the beginning of the month, tourism officials shared with Travel + Leisure. Previously, travelers needed to apply for an e-visa in advance of visiting to the tune of $51.50.

“Americans vacationing in Türkiye no longer require a visa to visit what has become one of America’s favorite overseas travel destinations,” Go Türkiye wrote in a statement shared with T+L. “2023 was the best year ever for American tourism to Türkiye, and with the cancellation of the visa requirement, 2024 is expected to be even bigger.”

Google Flights today is releasing a new feature that will help travelers better determine the right time to book. Rolling out this week, the company is debuting new insights that will leverage historical trend data that lets consumers see when prices have typically been lowest to their chosen destination on their selected dates.

The addition aims to help consumers answer the question as to whether it’s better to book their flight now or wait for lower prices.

For example, Google explains, the new insights could tell users that the cheapest time to book their trip is currently two months prior to departure or that, typically, prices for their trip have generally declined closer to the date of departure. With this new understanding of whether or not they’re getting the best deal, consumers may chose to either book immediately or wait for a better price.

The feature complements other insights Google Flights already offers, like the ability to see whether current prices for your search are low, typical or high, compared to past averages.

In addition, users have the ability to turn on price tracking to receive notifications when flight prices fall significantly for their selected dates or flexible dates, depending on their preferences.

Some flights will also feature a price guarantee badge, which means Google is confident the fare won’t get any lower before departure. If it does, Google will refund the difference via Google Pay. This is part of a pilot program available for select itineraries in the U.S. |

Up until now, you would need to fly to Cancún and set yourself on a two-hour car/bus ride to get to Tulum, but that's all about to change this December. Tulum's Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport is set to start operations and open the possibilities for travel to this destination.

As of right now, Viva Aerobus & Aeroméxico are the only airlines set to operate at this airport, but you can travel from the US with a short layover, and we found budget-friendly rates starting from $335 round-trip. |

Overbooking is part of airlines’ business model.

It’s a practice not commonly seen in the world of business, but experts assure that it’s a normal facet of the way the aviation industry works.

“Airlines work on incredibly thin margins, making around $10 (€9) per economy class ticket,” said Macheras.

One of the strategies airlines use to remain profitable is dynamic airline pricing, reacting to supply and demand, with passengers paying different rates depending on when they purchase their tickets.

Overbooking is just one of those various strategies airlines follow to make profits.

It is part of the sectors’ business model, and allows airlines to keep fares affordable. If it became illegal, “fares would go up immediately, as airlines would not have that financial safety net anymore,” warned Macheras.

Although people experiencing firsthand being bumped off a flight will understandably perceive the practice as unfair, “on the bigger picture and with a greater understanding, it is a benefit for both the industry and for passengers,” according to Macheras.

Perhaps you have spent the past few days on a cloud over your forthcoming, well-deserved vacation, and will go back to daydreaming about them as soon as you finish this article. And the truth is that the benefits of a good vacation can be felt even before the trip begins.

Scientific studies show that merely looking forward to a future reward can be even more rewarding than the reward itself. This is so thanks to a small molecule called dopamine, which we will talk about later.

But, before we continue, let's think about a few questions. Are vacations really necessary? Why do we need them? And, above all, what are the benefits of a few idle days?

Rest increases cognitive flexibility
Although this may seem unbelievable, there is very little scientific literature that explores the direct benefits of vacations on our brain. What does seem indisputable is that they are essential. This was concluded by a 2016 study in which 46 workers from a Dutch company participated.

The workers were asked to undergo a test in which they were given objects (for example, a hammer) and asked for the greatest number of uses for their objects in the shortest possible time (construction tool, weapon, paperweight, etc.). What the researchers observed is that, after two or three weeks of vacation, workers had greater cognitive flexibility. Or, to put it another way, they were able to think of a greater number of uses for the objects compared to the results obtained a couple of weeks before their vacations.

A festival of religious ritual dances, tsechus are integral to Bhutanese culture and take place everywhere, from tiny, isolated villages to some of the country's largest dzongs (monasteries). People travel from all over the country to watch monks perform elaborate dances while wearing bright costumes that swirl to rhythmic drumbeats.

Whether visiting a large festival or a smaller, more intimate tsechu, the highlight is the unveiling of the thangka, a giant embroidered religious image that’s believed to wash away the sins of those who view it.

Visiting there and exploring on your own may save you just a few dollars. But either way, you should add this to your Panamá itinerary!"

That overwhelming sensation of travel being more expensive this year as you try to plan a trip isn't your imagination. Even when flight prices are finally starting to trend down, the total cost of a trip is trending up. According to new data from travel insurance marketplace Squaremouth, the average cost of a trip is up 20% compared to last year.

Squaremouth polled more than 4,000 of its customers about travel spending habits—and it revealed that almost 90% of travelers are spending more than they normally do on travel. Based on travel insurance data, the cost of travel has risen since 2021, when the average cost of an insured trip was $5,189. In 2022, the average cost was $5,603. In 2023, that price has jumped nearly $1,000; the average cost of a trip this year is $6,587.

Unfortunately, this isn't likely to slow down this coming year. In 2024, spending records are expected to be broken in the travel industry. Poll respondents were asked why they anticipated spending more money on travel in 2024 and these were the top responses:

35% of travelers who anticipate spending more say it's because they are planning a bucket-list trip
31% attribute the increase to inflation and the rising cost of travel
19% of travelers are expecting to travel to expensive destinations in 2024
15% of travelers are planning to take longer trips in the new year

After judges and attorneys in the Turks and Caicos vocalized their concern over the number of American tourists arrested for breach of fi****ms laws, there comes a notable change in the Travel Advice from the US Embassy, based in Nassau, Bahamas.

Too many arrests and too many convictions of American visitors to Turks and Caicos over guns and ammunition, including a man, who was this week sentenced to 8 months in prison, have resulted in a sensible notice.

“To avoid U.S. citizens facing arrest in the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI) for bringing fi****ms, ammunition, or other weapons into the country, U.S. Embassy Nassau updated the TCI Travel.State.Gov page to reflect the criminal penalties attached to traveling unlawfully with such weapons,” said a media release issued on Friday September 22.

The advice is clearly warning US citizens not to take their guns and ammo into the TCI, where unless you are licensed by local law enforcement, it is illegal with a mandatory jail term of 12 years.

In late March, David O’Connor was found with 44 rounds of ammunition while exiting the Turks and Caicos Islands. In May, O’Connor was sentenced and fined between five to six thousands

Alec Nash, who was arrested over a firearm in his luggage in July was ordered to pay a $5,000 fine after pleading guilty to having an illegal firearm.

Most recently, the defendant was not so fortunate and in this case was sentenced to time in Grand Turk Prison. Michael Grim was arrested in early August, caught at the airport exiting with 20 rounds of ammunition. He was on Monday September 19, sentenced to eight months in prison with his parents looking on in the courtroom.

Held across the two weeks leading up to Lent, Venice Carnival is renowned for its extravagantly decorated masks and bright costumes. Dating back to the 11th century, the carnival includes parades, live music, and other open-air entertainment focused around Saint Mark’s Square, as well as a contest for la maschera più bella (the most beautiful mask). You can also watch gondola and boat parades along the Grand Canal.

For a greater focus on boat parades, though, visit Venice on the first Sunday in September to experience the Regata Storica, a centuries-old celebration of the city’s long history in rowing. From vantage points along the canal, you can watch boat races, as well as parades featuring brightly decorated gondolas with costumed crew. |

1. Demographic Changes: The Aging Global Population

The world’s population is aging rapidly. As the median age of many nations steadily rises, there’s growing demand for amenities, services, and experiences tailored to an older demographic. For the travel industry, this means a potential shift in popular destinations, types of accommodations, and the nature of activities offered.

There will be issues, such as labor shortages, since many travel jobs rely on younger workers. But there is also an opportunity for the travel industry: to craft enriching, accessible, and tailored travel experiences for an older yet increasingly active and adventurous population.

2. The Loneliness Crisis: Addressing Isolation in Western Societies.

The pandemic intensified feelings of isolation, especially in some Western societies where community ties may not be robust. It’s a loneliness crisis, and people are seeking meaningful connections more than ever.

3. The Future of Work: AI and Evolving Leisure Patterns.

The workplace is undergoing a big transformation. Advances in AI are automating a range of jobs, altering the very fabric of traditional employment. There’s no question this change is disruptive. But as work routines shift and provide more flexibility, people might find they have more leisure time.

How will they spend it? Travel could very well be the answer. But travel companies need to be agile, offering experiences that cater to varied schedules and evolving work-leisure dynamics.

4. Climate Adaptation: The Imperative of Sustainable Travel.

The immediate crisis of climate change demands immediate attention. For the travel sector, this means confronting the environmental impact of tourism. Sustainable travel practices and investments in green infrastructure are just some of the ways the industry can move towards a more resilient and sustainable future.
