The first meteor shower of 2025 will peak this week. The annual Quadrantid meteor shower has begun, with the best show expected during the early hours of Friday. As the Earth orbits the sun, several times a year it passes through debris left by passing comets—and sometimes asteroids. When these fast-moving space rocks enter Earth's atmosphere, the debris encounters new resistance from the air and becomes very hot, eventually burning up. Sometimes the surrounding air glows briefly, leaving behind a fiery tail—the end of a "shooting star."You don’t need special equipment to see the various meteor showers that flash across annually, just a spot away from city lights.

Yellow-headed Caracara (Milvago chimachima)
While similar in appearance to hawks, Caracaras are actually members of the Falconidae, which includes kites and falcons. Unlike the other members of this family, caracaras have specialized in feeding on carrion. For this reason the yellow-headed caracara is able to inhabit a diverse range of habitats and can often be seen along roadways looking for road kill. They are often found in small groups and have a very loud screeching call. Adults have a creamy yellow-brown head and under-parts with dark brown wings that are crossed by a single pale bar.

The magnificent frigatebird, frigate petrel or man o' war is a seabird of the frigatebird family Fregatidae. With a length of 89–114 centimetres and wingspan of 2.17–2.44 m it is the largest species of frigatebird. The magnificent frigatebird is widespread in the tropical Atlantic, breeding colonially in trees in Florida, the Caribbean and also along the Pacific coast of the Americas from Mexico to Ecuador, including the Galápagos Islands. Some say that the shape looks like "batman" when soaring at high altitudes 😅
