A Statue of David Hume (1711-1776) can be found on the Royal Mile. Hume was a key member of the Scottish Enlightenment and is regarded as one the most influential philosophers in history. His seminal work is titled: The Treatise of Human Nature. He attended the University of Edinburgh at age 11 and his Tomb can be found on Calton Hill.

With the usual Scottish sense of humour a traffic cone can often be found perched upon his head. The statue is a popular feature in the Old Town.

Charlotte Square near Albyn Place was named after King George III's daughter in 1786 and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage New Town. Within the Gardens stands a statue of Prince Albert, Consort to Queen Victoria.

This premier address in the City has been home to many Lords and Ladies of Scottish society over the years. Bute House, at Number 6 is also the formal residence of the First Minister for Scotland.

Holyrood Park is the Royal park in central Edinburgh which is open to the public. It has an array of hills, lochs, glens, ridges, basalt cliffs, and patches of gorse, providing a wild piece of highland landscape within its 650-acre (260 ha) area.

The park is associated with the royal palace of Holyroodhouse and was formerly a 12th-century royal hunting estate.

Arthur's Seat, an extinct volcano and the highest point in Edinburgh, is at the centre of the park, with the cliffs of Salisbury Crags to the west. There are three lochs: and several ruins including St Anthony's Chapel which dates to 1400.

Get your walking boots on and you will get the most amazing view over Edinburgh and beyond.

Edinburgh's 'second castle' is Craigmillar Castle, a ruined medieval castle that lies just three miles south-east of the city centre.

Craigmillar is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Scotland dating back to the 1300's and is best known for its association with Mary, Queen of Scots.

The Palace of Holyroodhouse commonly referred to as Holyrood Palace or Holyroodhouse, is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland.

Located at the bottom of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, at the opposite end to Edinburgh Castle, Holyroodhouse has served as the principal royal residence in Scotland since the 16th century.

The Queen visits at the beginning of each summer on her way to Balmoral.
