This is Almería's favorite road for bikers to challenge the altitude
With the arrival of warm weather, motorcycle lovers are eager to explore the most scenic and exciting roads. From winding mountains to rugged coastlines and green water beaches, these routes offer an unforgettable experience for any biker.
Almería, due to its unique landscapes and climate, presents a very attractive setting to put on your overalls and put on your helmet. Not only for local bikers, but also for other lovers of the smell of gasoline from neighboring territories such as Granada or Murcia.
Motorcycle routes have become a popular form of tourism that offers a different experience. Enjoying driving in every curve, in every opening of the gas or in every break with the group is mixed with the discovery of impressive landscapes, history and culture. A tourism segment that revitalizes small towns and reveals historical and natural heritage that could go unnoticed if it were not for these routes that stimulate community and camaraderie.
Perhaps the most popular Almeria route for the biker community is the climb to Alto de Velefique. Whether from Almería, Granada or Murcia, motorcycle enthusiasts choose this itinerary to enjoy endless curves and a feeling of freedom. Starting from Murcia you can take a spectacular 560 kilometer route that crosses Almería to reach the Sierra de Baza. This route has the places of Huércal-Overa, Macael, Tahal, Tabernas, Velefique, Bacares, Gérgal and Escúllar as protagonists. An adventure of more than 4 hours of driving surrounded by extreme nature and dizzying views with a 2-hour stop. Specifically in the 17th port and in the 34th valley until reaching Puebla de Don Fadrique in Granada.
The Sierra de los Filabres offers mountainous stretches ideal for stopping along the way and appreciating the majesty of Almeria's nature. Since the panoramic views offered by points like Bacares or Gérgal from a motorcycle can make you hold your breath.
For their part, bikers traveling from Granada reach Alto de Velefique / Calar Alto through Pozo Alcón to return through the Marquesado, the Granda Geopark and Sierra Nevada. Another picturesque route that has the Sierra de los Filabres as its highest point.
Climb to the Almerian Alps
Fun and adrenaline is what seasoned pilots who know these Almeria roads feel when they leave the plains of the Tabernas desert to face the challenging ports of Velefique. For some, the AL-3102 is one of the country's favorite roads and the Alto de Velefique is considered the 'Spanish Stelvio Pass' (the largest paved mountain pass in the Eastern Alps).
If you want to enter this unique circuit and prefer to do it from the province of Almería, this is your route: Tíjola, Bayarque, Bacares, Velefique and Tabernas. An itinerary of just over 60 km in which you can visit the Bacares Castle, Alto de Velefique, Mirador del Pedregal and the well-known Tabernas desert. A circuit of almost 1h.30min in which you will have no problems refueling, since both in Tíjola and Tabernas you have service stations.
Bonus track
For those bikers who prefer to feel the sea breeze nearby. Exploring the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park is another good option. The Sierra de Gata, the rugged and virgin coast, and its semi-desert landscape on the shores of the Mediterranean offers a driving experience along the winding coastal roads that provide impressive views of the sea, dream beaches and charming coastal towns.
