Intro: The place which Gavara (The ancient mammal which lived in Sri Lanka) lived, use to call as Gavarawila. This is located in central province and in between Peak Wildness Sanctuary and Horton plain National park. Gavarawila is rich with magnificent sceneries and better place for camping since it is a plain surrounded by mountains. The average temperature of the place is slightly cool.
Route: If you travel from Colombo, go to Hatton and reach to Gartmore via Maskeliya. The first public bus from Maskeliya to Gatmore starts at 5.50 a.m. The bus may park near the Maskeliya police station. Then go to Frogmore. If you travel by a vehicle you can go by vehicle until Frogmore. Or you have to go by foot or by trishaw from Gartmore to Frogmore. Then you can approach to Gawarawila after a 6km walk through the forest. And if you start from Gatmore you have to walk about 3 km through tea estate and and 6km through the forest to your destination Gawarawila.
Advice: You will find small spots here and there which have been dug for mining. So be aware of them. If you are planning to camp there, be responsible not to destroy the land by throwing away liters, burning bushes. And specially, avoid contaminating water sources. The environment is abundant with leeches and you will experience extreme cold weather condition. Therefore, be prepared for that also.
