While an unending stream of propaganda fills the news, reports of Zika-caused birth defects are woefully under reported. The administration and Congressional leadership wants to slash CDC and NIH funding. Regardless of politics, this puts our public health system in grave danger.

A study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reinforced evidence that women infected in the first trimester were at greater risk of having babies with birth defects.

This revision would also take away the requirement that policies include essential benefits. Our company has no political dog in this fight. Rather, we want what is best for patients and their families. This is not good for those who buy individual insurance plans.

The proposal would effectively eliminate one of the Affordable Care Act’s most popular provisions.

Tax credits are not only not a substitute, but would severely impact the quality of all of our care. Insurers would pay less out on claims, and cover less types of care including mental illness. A decrease in payments to healthcare providers means the quality of care our providers could provide would be drastically reduced. Research and innovation would be harmed. Allowing ill equipped politicians to make medical decisions based on dollars and cents and not quality of care is an extremely dangerous proposition.

At the very least, you might be able to get a short term plan. It, most likely, won't meet the guidelines necessary to avoid tax penalties and it won't be as good as other long term plans, but something is better than nothing.
