THE JUDEAN WILDERNESS / DESERT & PSALM 23
Located towards the north-east and south-east of the Jerusalem-Hebron watershed ridge. When travelling through the Judean Wilderness / Desert note it is one of the world's smallest, yet most unique desert regions of arid rugged gorges and bad lands in the eastern part of Judea descending to the Dead Sea region. The land slopes off towards the Jordan Valley. In Biblical times known for the Lion, the bear, and other wild animals. The area which the poet-warrior King David knew well and spent his childhood, imagining water and green pastures. A perfect choice for a district to flee from King Saul’s wrath.
David wrote many of his Psalms in the wilderness drawing on his shepherd lifestyle to use it as an analogy for behavior and peace of mind which only the Almighty can bring.
Perhaps the best-known might be Psalm 23, and written in David’s flight from King Saul. Calling upon the Divine Shechinah to rest on him, restore to him contentment and tranquilly as he sang in this parched land riddled with deep ravines, where the sun never reaches the bottom. David’s rod and staff comfort him, being the same instrument of support to cross the rugged terrain and a weapon. An instrument on which to lean and ward off danger. Anointed in I Samuel 16, even before slaying Goliath, and in the face of the shadows of death, David remains comforted and the hope of a long life.
PSALM 23
1. The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want;
2. he makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters;
3. he restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
4. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me.
5. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows.
6. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
