Lori K Aitken - Bookkeeper 25 years experience in retail banking, credit services and investment planning helped me decide to streamline my skills into small business bookkeeping.

My goal is to help small businesses establish good bookkeeping practices so they can flourish. Small business owners wear many hats, not the least of which includes owner, operator, finance manager, advertising executive, designer, manufacturer, distributor, service provider, and the list goes on. While every entrepreneur starts out as this task-juggling do-it-yourself-er, eventually you hit a cri

tical tipping point when administering the business is preventing you from the opportunity to grow your business. Choosing to let someone else steer the financial reins isn’t easy. I wholeheartedly understand. Whether you simply need assistance in getting set up with a functional bookkeeping platform or you want to hand off the whole process entirely, I’m here to help. Let’s meet for coffee and figure it out together.

I’ve been limping along with an underpowered computer for 4.5 years. In the early stages of my business, when I was spending more time researching and learning than I was processing client work, it didn’t have a significant impact. In the past 2 years though, it’s been akin to having one hand tied behind my back every single day.
This is one of those, “Which comes first, the chicken or the egg?”, scenarios! Do I wait until I have more profit in order to afford upgrading my equipment or will upgrading the equipment make it easier to generate the revenue that will cover the expense?
My husband and colleagues finally convinced me of the latter and with a little help from the Apple Business unit, I have a high-powered beast of a machine on it’s way to change my work life in immeasurable ways!
Oh my gosh, watching the tracker is like waiting for Santa to arrive!!!

Too cute!!!

“Tax season, tax season… I know I have to declare the pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts and almonds I received but what about all the seeds & peanuts? Do I still have to declare them even though they weren’t technically mine? Will those sneaky Blue Jays rat me out to the taxman? Ohhhh… what to do, what to do…” 😣💥🐿️💭

Time flies! I can’t believe that five whole years have gone by since I took a leap of faith and started my own bookkeeping practice. Those first couple of clients who took a chance on me were just the right mix of brave and crazy!

That popular saying, “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.”, is a bit of a misnomer because as an entrepreneur you’ll likely work twice as hard as you ever have before, but I love the flexibility it has given me and the confidence I’ve developed in the process.

I often get asked about my advice to new business owners and I can’t narrow it down to just one thing but here’s my top three:
1. Meet people! Join your local business association. Attend some workshops and seminars. Find Facebook groups relevant to your industry. Attend conferences. Soak in every webinar you can find. Ask questions. Ask for help! All of these ways to meet people will help you discover what you don’t yet know and will provide the peers, colleagues, and mentors who will help you learn!
2. Have a dedicated chequing account, savings account, and credit card for business use only. This is non-negotiable. Your future bookkeeper, accountant, or tax preparer will thank you for this. This will save you money and a heap of frustration over the lifetime of your business. Just trust me on that.
3. When we work together, we all succeed. I suppose this goes hand in hand with my first point, but hear me out. There was a time when competing businesses were adversaries. They held their secrets tight to their chest. I don’t believe that to be true anymore. When you share what you’ve learned with an up and coming business in your industry, your combined success furthers the development of your industry. So, seek the counsel of those who’ve paved the way before you and pay it forward to the ones who will follow in your footsteps. Together, you’re trailblazers!

Long time, no see! I’ve still been in my home office each day happily working away to take care of my clients’ books even though I’ve been quiet on social media.
Today is the first day of Intuit’s 2022 digital conference. I’m viewing the Day 1 agenda from the recovery room of my elderly dachshund Daisy’s veterinary office while she wakes up from a dental procedure. She did great!
I certainly miss the camaraderie of in-person conferences but the digital substitute certainly worked out great today. 👍🏻

Is anyone else as grateful as I am that GSuite/Gmail double-checks if you want to hit send when you haven’t added an attachment? 😂

Each month of the first year in a new space is a continual process of discovery. For example, on each sunny day the sun’s reflection blinds me in the most glorious way at 3:38 pm each day. I love it!
