I have to admit something. It’s not the worst thing in the world, but it’s also not something I’m proud of...⁠

One of the biggest pitfalls that people fall into when going on a whole food, plant-based diet, I also tumbled into. I thought I was being so good cutting out all the meat, fish, dairy and eggs that I overlooked one of the basic tenets of a whole food, plant-based diet when it came to one little area. Sweets. Yes, I fell into the vegan junk food trap too!⁠ 🤦‍♀️⁠

Nobody is perfect, including me, so if you succumbed to the lure of vegan junk food too, cut yourself some slack. And if you’re thinking of going whole food, plant-based, the one little realization that I had can help you preemptively avoid the same sugary fate.⁠

I hear it over and over. I want to start meditating, but I’m not sure how. Any advice?⁠

First, amazing. The benefits of meditation are countless. Second, if you’re looking to start meditating and reap the benefits of this powerful practice, try for just five minutes a day. There’s no right or wrong time of day and there’s no right or wrong way. ⁠

However, I get that the idea of beginning a meditation practice can be daunting. So when starting out, you may prefer the guidance of an app to get you on track. Lucky for you, there are a plethora of options out there. And doubly lucky for you, I already did the sorting process to find the best of the best to jump-start your meditation journey.⁠

We promise to get in shape, eat healthier, be kinder. But too often our goals are too vague to work for us and we fail to give ourselves a roadmap to make them a reality.

Ayurveda...the top two questions I hear: 1) What is it? and 2) How do you say it?

Easier question first. It's pronounced: ai-yr-vei-duh.

The other question is a bit more involved, but Ayurveda is a 5,000-year-old Indian "science of life" (ayur=life, veda=science) that offers a systematic approach to health and well-being based on the three doshas: vata, pitta and kapha.

While the topic of Ayurveda is massive, I've found one aspect particularly helpful in my life: how different times of the day correspond to different doshas.

This simple breakfast of chia seed pudding with banana, dates, ground flaxseed and granola offers up some powerhouse ingredients that should be included in any plant-based diet.

Chia seeds contain an impressive amount of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, iron, calcium, protein and antioxidants, while flaxseeds also provide omega-3s, fiber and lignans, which help lower the risk of cancer. They have the added bonus of improving cholesterol levels and lowering blood pressure too.

Sprinkle both on smoothie bowls, oatmeal, salads, anything really for an added nutritional punch!

After spending six months in India, I have a special affinity for Hindu temples. I love their brightly colored exteriors and statues of gods and goddesses.⠀

Sri Mahamariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Penang, Malaysia. When I dropped by to check it out, I was lucky enough to watch an offering to Shiva.⠀

I stood to the side with my hands clasped in anjali mudra. I could feel my heart beating in my chest and the energy of the moment coarsing through my body. I closed my eyes and felt the presence of Shiva and his grace descending over me. ⠀

During my temple visits in India, I'd never felt so connected as I did in that moment. I chant daily to Shiva as part of my sadhana, and I took this feeling as a sign that he is listening...

You are what you eat. Just like a flamingo!⠀

The color of their feathers is the result of the pigment in their food (called carotenoids), which includes shrimp, algae and crustaceans. ⠀

While we might not turn colors from our diet (wouldn't that be amazing, though?), what we eat has a noticeable affect on our appearance. Here's some food for thought on the connection between diet and our skin.⠀

Overall, diets rich in fruit and vegetables reduce inflammation and decrease the likelihood of breakouts.⠀

Foods to include:⠀

Vitamin A helps regulate the skin so acne-causing protein and oil don't get trapped. => carrots, spinach, broccoli⠀

Vitamins C and E help calm the skin. => oranges, lemons, grapefruit / sweet potatoes, nuts, avocados⠀

Selenium contains antioxidants that help protect the skin from free radicals. => wheat germ, Brazil nuts, brown rice⠀

Omega-3 fatty acids promote cell turnover and keep inflammation at bay. => flaxseed, walnuts, almonds⠀

Foods to avoid: ⠀

Diary products can promote or worsen acne due to hormones that increase androgens that then lead to sebum prroduction. => milk, cheese, yogurt⠀

Simple sugars or foods with a high glycemic index are linked with acne breakouts as they increase insulin levels, which then up androgen levels and sebum production. => white bread, sugary sodas, processed baked goods, refined grains⠀

Believe it or not, the fact that this was a "protein bowl" was actually a deterrent when I saw it on the menu. ⠀

I'm glad I ordered it despite, because, oh ma lord, it was delicious. I want to swim in a vat of that coconut yogurt.⠀

But back to my earlier point. There's a misconception that the more protein we eat, the better. Which is just not true. We should be getting 10-15% of our calories from protein (and according to the WHO, it should only be 5%). Excess protein can actually be a danger because its excretion taxes the liver, kidneys and bones. ⠀

So while we obviously need protein, it can easily become too much of a good thing. And if you're eating a majority whole food, plant-based diet, you're likely already getting your fill so no need to overdo it with protein powders, protein bars, protein shakes and, I'll admit it, protein bowls...⠀

According to , people who are able to really lean into joy (without then catastrophizing) all share one thing: gratitude. ⠀

Gratitude is such a powerful practice and I find myself saying "Thank you" all day every day. On the day this photo was taken, I was thankful for this view, thankful for the beauty of nature, thankful for the legs that brought me to the top of the mountain, thankful for the company of my friend , thankful that I'd just decided to quit my job and venture to India and the unknown, thankful for the gift of this beautiful life I lead.⠀

Try saying thank you more and you'll have more and more to be thankful for... ⠀
