A few months ago, we were in a little town about an hour away from where I live. This particular morning, we were doing ministry work and we came upon a kind older man who invited us into his home. He pulled out some stools for us and we chatted as he introduced his wife to us. She was in a wheelchair and had evidently had a stroke. She never received treatment or therapy and was left partially paralyzed and unable to talk. The thing that really pained me was she could still understand. She tried to communicate with us and she just cried. We understood she was trying to tell us she could no longer do anything for her family. Her elderly husband has to cook and clean. She just sits in her chair and looks out the window, day in and out. The friend who was with me worked for many years at the local health center in our town so she immediately got on the phone. The husband explained they didn't have money to seek treatment and no one have ever told them there were any options. Sadly, there is an organization that offers free therapy to those in need - but they were never even educated on the possibility. When we told him there was a free option, he was concerned because he wouldn't be able to get her on public transportation, much less be able to pay for it. It's hard to imagine a scenario where a $1 public transit ride is out of your realm of possibilities, but there it is. And the cycle of the impoverished continues. But it doesn't have to. We can be the drop in the water that makes a ripple of a difference. And you won't be able to imagine the difference it will make in YOUR life.

Join us for our next retreat. One spot left for November. The waitlist for the next one is also now open.

Wanna know what others have experienced at this unique, one of a kind service retreat?

Check out just one part of Lauren's experience...

"Day 1 in Guatemala…. So much to share!

After driving from Guatemala City to Panajachel, we immediately went to the Fundamaya office that hosts lunch for the elderly.

Many of the Mayan families here simply don’t have enough to feed their entire family. They have to choose who eats and often the children are favored, leaving the senior population on their own. Some no longer have families at all.

It’s not easy for them to reach the office on the steep mountainside, and some depend on others to bring them their meal.

Sitting down with the program director was a humbling experience. I’m seldom without words, but I was so impressed by her leadership.

Her daughter is also involved in the organization and a native woman, Gloria, helps them preserve the Mayan culture and language in all of the work that they do in the communities here (everything from schools to animals to elderly to food to medicine to home supplies and then so much more).

After checking in to our Airbnb, Ashley Weigl took us to a hole in the wall restaurant that was insanely delicious!

The chef and owner is a Guatemalan man who made his way up through the business starting as a dish washer. His food and presentation was 😲👌

Early to bed that night and early to rise for a day of labor… day 2 coming soon!"

Wanna hear more about Lauren's experience? Stay tuned - we may be doing a live here soon to share juicy details!

Did you know?

*Guatemala is one of the poorest countries in Latin America, with over half of its population living below the national poverty line.

*Extreme poverty is particularly prevalent in rural and indigenous communities, where access to basic services such as clean water, healthcare, and education is limited.

*According to the World Bank, poverty rates are highest among indigenous populations, with indigenous people representing a disproportionate share of the country's poor.

Come join us as we team up with Fundamaya to make a difference in these amazing people's lives and experience the lasting difference it will make it yours as well!

I was recently in a small rural town, here in Guatemala. I had the opportunity to meet a lovely young couple while there. I found out that they were married last year. They have a 2 year old daughter. The husband is 15 and his wife is 14. Read that again.

We struggled to communicate with one another because in Indigenous communities like the one we visited, education is not readily available. This particular couple almost exclusively speak their local language, Quiché. While Spanish is the national language, MANY people who are born in small indigenous communities like this one will never have opportunities available to them outside of their communities. There are 22 indigenous languages spoken in Guatemala so their worlds become very small when the only language they fluently speak is the one from their village.

Girls will never know a world that exists outside of having children from a young age. They'll never learn to read or write. Even young men will never learn to read beyond a 1st grade level, if at all. And the cycle of poverty continues because people are held down because of an ignorance that is not their fault.

That is why we partner with a local organization who gives focus to providing educations to those who otherwise would not have the opportunity. If you want to learn how you can get involved, shoot me a DM or join the waitlist at ashleyweigl.com
