Sasquatches have long been a subject of debate among researchers and enthusiasts. The existence of these elusive creatures has been questioned over the years, yet the local Sts'ailes people who refer to the Sasquatches as Sasq'ets, are believed to be spiritual beings who have inhabited the dense forests of Harrison Hot Springs for centuries. The local Sasquatch Museum, located at 499 Hot Springs Road, showcases a variety of artifacts, articles, and evidence, that are sure to turn even the most skeptical individuals into believers.

Feature Friday: Kawkawa Lake is a place of beauty and serenity, but did you know that its original Sto:lo name was Q'owqewem, and it had a rich history. Legend has it that Q'owqewem was home to two loons named Q'ewq'ewe'lot and Q'ewq'weelacha. Additionally one fateful day, a young Sto:lo man from a village on the other side of Thacker Mountain covered in sores all over his body decided to end his life by jumping off a nearby cliff into the depths of Q'owqewem. As he plummeted into the lake, he encountered a group of mysterious water babies. These little sprites, covered in sores just like him, begged him to heal them with the promise of a gift, after curing them the Sto:lo man returned to consciousness in his village with his skin completely healed. One day, while fishing, the man's sister stumbled upon something extraordinary. As she pulled her net out of the water, she discovered a Sxwayxwey mask. This type of mask holds deep spiritual significance for the Sto:lo people. Kawkawa Lake, nestled in landscapes of Hope, serves as a reminder of the Sto:lo people's deep connection to the land and their enduring spirit.

We are excited to start a new series, where we will be showcasing various communities at the end of each week. Today, we are kicking off our first Feature Friday with Coquitlam, a beautiful community located along our scenic route.

Coquitlam is known for its picturesque landscapes and natural beauty. One place that showcases this beauty is Mundy Park, which was once a homestead established by George Munday in 1888. George bought the land with the hope that it would become valuable when the railway came around. However, his hopes were dashed when the railway bypassed his land, leading to its subsequent ownership changes.

Eventually, Mundy Park became the name we recognize today, in honour of George Munday. This park has become a popular destination for residents and visitors alike, offering a serene and tranquil atmosphere.

Today is National Indigenous Peoples Day. On June 21st, is important to honour the history and culture of Indigenous Peoples all across the country. Scenic Route 7 is on the unceded, traditional, ancestral, and shared Indigenous territories of Kwikwetlem, Tsleil-Waututh, Qayqayt, Katzie, Kwantlen, Scowlitz, Matheqwí, Semá:th, Leq’á:mel, Sts’ailes, Seabird Island, Sq’ewá:lxw, Cheam, Xa'xtsa, Samahquam, Skatin, Chawathil, Cheam, Seabird Island, Shxw’ow’hamel, Xwoxwela:lhp, Peters, Popkum, Skawahlook, Spuzzum, Boston Bar, Boothroyd, and Similkameen Peoples.

In recognition and honour of the Indigenous Peoples of Scenic Route 7 and of Canada, we invite you to attend National Indigenous Peoples Day events and/or seek education on the Indigenous culture and history of the region.
