Noren (curtain-like fabric) are ubiquitous throughout Japan and are typically found hanging outside entrances to hot-spring spas, traditional houses and restaurants. Noren play the role of signboards or flags and are an example of traditional culture preserved in modern life.

There is a common saying that goes, “if the noren is dirty, the shop is in good business.” The reason is that a busy shop will have many customers touching the noren, thus making it dirty. 🏮
