Descourtilz preserved General Dessalines’s exhortation to his troops in 1802 Haitian Creole.

“Vouz’ autr’ tiembe coeur.... Blancs france layo pas capab’ tenir contr’ bon homme Saint-Domingue.... Coutez ben: si Dessalines va rendre cent fois, li va trahi cent fois”

Translated:
“Have courage, have courage, I tell you, the French can’t hold out long in Saint-Domingue.... Hear what I say: if Dessalines surrenders to them a hundred times, he will betray them a hundred times!”

From August 14th of 1791, a political and spiritual event we now know as “Bois Caïman” took place in the northern plains of present day Haïti and started the Haitian Revolution.

In the night of the 22nd of August a group from the Héron estate arrived at the Dutilh Plantation in l’Acul tasked BOUKMAN as one of the two men the group elected to lead the revolt.

Boukman lit the first of the fires on the night of 22nd into 23rd August, 1791, in Saint Domingue, today the Republic of Haïti, that would burn thousands of acres of sugar plantation to the ground and set the beginning to the end of the transatlantic slave trade.

It is due to our ancestors actions that the “International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition”
is commemorated on the 23rd of August each year. It was first celebrated in a number of countries, in particularly in Haïti and Gorée Island in Senegal (23 August 1999)
