Taranaki's Civil Defence Emergency Co-ordination Centre and NPDC's Emergency Operations Centre are working to monitor and respond to the severe weather event we are experiencing.
More than a metre of rain has fallen on the maunga/mountain causing significant flows down all rivers.
Impacts include: flooding, road closures, dangerous driving conditions, animal welfare concerns, and fallen trees are still an issue.
If you see water rising leave and move to higher ground don't wait for official warnings.
You should always have a grab bag containing essential items ready in case you need to evacuate quickly.
Your animals are your responsibility don't forget to provide safety for them. Move stock to higher ground if it is safe to do so.
TRC staff have been monitoring rivers overnight and continue to do so.
Staff are stationed at the Waitara Flood Protection Scheme and are closely monitoring is ongoing.
At this stage, at this stage there are no plans to implement further flood protection measures and the Waitara Bridge is expected to remain open. However, if the situation changes an update will be provided to the community.
Take care on roads. Increase your following distance, it takes longer to stop in the rain, drive to the conditions, delay unnecessary travel if possible, put your headlights on, slow down and be patient.
The Metservice forecast for Taranaki overnight and into tomorrow is for more heavy rain easing overnight and the wind watch has been lifted, but an additional short burst of heavy rain is expected tomorrow morning.
