In honor of Sayadaw U Nandamālābhivaṁsa's 80th birthday, the website hosting His Dhamma teachings is officially launched!

Sayadaw U Nandamāla, who hails from Myanmar, is one of the most illustrious Dhamma teachers of our present age. Over the course of many years, Sayadaw has been providing lectures and talks on the authentic teachings of the Buddha. Yearly, He conducts a special course on a chosen Dhamma topic for international students.

This website collects many of His English teachings given over the years (courses, books, lectures and others), on topics such as: Nibbāna, Samatha-Vipassanā, Paṭiccasamuppāda (dependent origination) and more.

The website also serves as a platform to provide information about Sayadaw's English teaching schedule and activities.

A Little-known Pagoda in Yangon



In Yangon there is a little-known pagoda which was built by Sayagyi U Ba Khin to commemorate his teacher Saya Thet Gyi after he had passed away.

Many meditators may think that the Global Vipassana Pagoda is the first pagoda built by a student in commemoration of their teacher. However, it is not. The tradition of constructing pagodas in commemoration of one’s teacher has been passed down through the lineage of teachers. There is a small, relatively unknown pagoda in Yangon which Sayagyi U Ba Khin built in commemoration of his beloved teacher Saya Thet Gyi.

Saya Thet Gyi was entombed at the foot of the hill on which Shwedagon Pagoda stands. Goenkaji himself meditated there together with some of his students. Fortunately I was one of the few who had this special opportunity to meditate with Goenkaji there.

After reading U Thein Zan’s book, I asked him about the pagoda that Sayagyi built in memory of Saya Thet Gyi because I had heard about the story about it. U Thein Zan confirmed the pagoda’s name, and after some research I was able to locate it. It was built before IMC and sadly, sometime later on, U Ba Khin lost access to the pagoda. Anyway, I believe that this lead him towards building his own meditation centre and pagoda with meditation cells in it at IMC.

Dear Travellers on the path of Dhamma;

Be happy
Keep the torch of Dhamma alight.
Let it shine brightly in your daily life.

Always remember, Dhamma is not an escape.
It is an art of living: living in peace and harmony with oneself
And also with all others.
Hence, try to live a Dhamma life.
Don’t miss your daily sitting each morning and evening.
Whenever possible, attend weekly joint sittings with other Vipassana meditators.
Do a ten day course as an annual retreat.
This is essential to keep you going strong.
With all confidence, face the spikes around you bravely and smilingly.
Renounce hatred and aversion, ill will and animosity.
Generate love and compassion, especially for those who do not understand Dhamma and are living an unhappy life.
May your Dhamma behavior show them the path of peace and harmony.
May the glow of Dhamma on your faces attract more and more suffering people to this path of real happiness.
May all beings be happy, peaceful , liberated.

Overview

Since 2013, the Australia Myanmar Institute (AMI) has worked to facilitate Australian and international education institutions, government and non-governmental organisations, and businesses working with Myanmar counterparts in strengthening research, public policy and its implementation in Myanmar.

Building on the success of AMI’s 2015 conference on Myanmar and the Millennium Development Goals, the 2017 conference, also co-organised with the Myanmar Institute for Strategic and International Studies (MISIS), will bring together participants from government, academia, civil society and the public policy sphere to discuss Myanmar’s progress towards the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Conference is expected to take place at Yangon University.

This year’s Conference will extend the initial discussion on the SDGs in the context of the 2015 elections, which formed the basis of the 2015 AMI conference at Yangon University.

The 2017 Conference will provide an opportunity to:

• Review Myanmar’s priorities and progress towards addressing the SDGs
• Enable participants to engage with the contemporary evidence base
• Illustrate some of the mechanisms through which the Sustainable Development Goals can be met
• Point to effective pathways for international collaboration with Myanmar’s Government and civil society
• Lead to the publication of a diverse series of academic and policy papers by both Myanmar and international participants
