Today citizen Joséphine Baker will enter the Pantheon in Paris during a state ceremony.
The Pantheon is the burial site of 81 exceptional individuals including Marie et Pierre Curie, Simone Weill, Voltaire, Rousseau, Louis Braille and Victor Hugo. Being inducted into the Pantheon is France's highest honor.
The presidential decree states "World-renowned music hall artist, committed to the Resistance, tireless anti-racist activist, she was involved in all the fights that bring together citizens of goodwill, in France and around the world.
For all these reasons, because she is the embodiment of the French spirit, Joséphine Baker, who died in 1975, deserves the recognition of her homeland."
"To the great men, the grateful homeland" are the words written on the facade of the monument.
