ʻĪao Valley is an unique area brimming with history and natural beauty. Taking a swim in the crystal-clear water is unbelievably refreshing, and is certain to invigorate both body and spirit. Kuka‘emoku, often called the ʻĪao Needle, overlooks a lush valley that was the site of the 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai ("the damming of the waters"), in which Kamehameha I defeated Kalanikūpule. This defining moment in Maui's history is also referred to as Kaʻuwaʻupali, or "Clawed off the Cliff". The park features multiple scenic overlooks, an ethnobotanical garden, and access to the Wailuku River. Located just minutes outside of historic Wailuku, ʻĪao Valley is a special place with a deep connection to Maui's past.
