Amata is one of Latvia's fastest rivers, especially in spring when paddlers from all over the country flock to enjoy the rapids and magnificent sandstone cliffs along Amata's banks. One of the steepest banks is Zvārtes rock, which is around 350 million years old and 20 m high. Various legends mention witches gathering at the Rock, flying on brooms from the surrounding pine forests.
Amata might be the best river for adventurous paddling, but bear in mind that some stretches might be unsafe and even dangerous, especially the last stretch after Zvārtes rock. Even smaller rapids may upturn your boat and throw you into the freezing water. And the sharp turns right along the sandstone cliffs, where the stream is the fastest, may press you against the rock, where you'll have great difficulty to swim through the raging waters to safety.
Moreover, in spring the weather is still quite cold ❄ and it might rain or snow, thus prepare quick departure options and dry clothes.
For those who enjoy drier and slower tours, there is a wonderful path along the right bank, starting from Melturi and ending at Veclauču bridge 🌉.
