Witness Nagaland's Culture and Tradition at the Hornbill Festival

The Hornbill Festival, held annually from December 1st to 10th in Kohima, Nagaland, is a vibrant celebration of the region's rich cultural heritage. This extravaganza brings together various tribes from Nagaland, showcasing their traditional customs, art forms, folk and war dances.

Immerse yourself in the rhythmic beats of the traditional Naga war dances, performed with great gusto by very seriously looking ‘warriors’ adorned in colourful traditional attire. While the dances will keep you captivated most of the time, the festival also showcases the intricate craftsmanship of the Nagas, displayed in the tribal handicrafts such as woodwork and textiles, and witness the thrilling indigenous games that test strength and agility.

The Hornbill Festival also offers a unique opportunity to savour Naga delicacies, bursting with flavours of the fields and forests that reflect the region's culinary diversity. From smoked meats to spicy ferns and bamboo shoot-infused dishes, indulge in the gastronomic delights of Nagaland's cuisine.

While the food, games and artwork will definitely be captivating, it will be the war dances that will leave an everlasting impression. The Nagas used to be quite an independent lot, defying first the British and later the Indian hegemony. Their fierce and uncompromising nature erupted regularly into small-scale warfare with neighbouring Naga or other tribes. They developed the in South and Southeast Asia unique habit of taking their slain opponents’ skulls. Christian missionaries managed to convince them to bury their warlike habits - as they were a far cry from “love thy neighbour,” and also (most of) the skulls.

So come and join the revelry and witness the vibrant energy of the Hornbill Festival, where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with modern expressions. Experience the warmth of Naga hospitality and take home memories of a cultural extravaganza unlike any other.

Call or Whatsapp us at +91 8130810560 or drop us an e-mail at [email protected] for a custom-made tour to the northeast that includes a visit to the Hornbill Festival.

14/07/2023

Kyang, often mistakenly called wild asses, are the wild horses of Changtang, the high-altitude plain that stretches from Ladakh into western Tibet. Kyang have some donkey-like features, such as their relatively large ears.

However, scientific classification places them firmly within the Equus genus, making them one of the seven wild horse species on Earth, alongside the tarpan, Przewalski's horse, and two kinds of zebras. Kyang themselves definitely feel a closer kinship with horses, as evidenced by the behaviour of some kyang stallions, who take great pleasure in abducting domesticated mares.

Biologists generally consider two animals to be of the same species if they can produce fertile offspring together. The outcome of the above-mentioned brief romances is a very horsey-looking creature that is fertile. Liaisons with donkeys, however, are fruitless. So that settles it.

Horsemen, who keep horses for transportation of goods in remote areas and on treks, are typically quite unhappy with the outcome of these brief romances. Initially, all seems fine as the foals are hardly distinguishable from other horse foals. However, when the time comes for serious pack horse duties, they prove to be completely unmanageable, displaying a stubbornness which, admittedly, is reminiscent of donkeys…

The kyang are the only horse species that is fully adapted to life on the barren, cold high plateau of western Tibet and Ladakh, staying year-round above 4000m, at winter temperatures of minus 30 C or colder. They live off the very nutrient-poor and sparse grasses and herbs that manage to survive here as well.

The kyang need to roam far and wide in order to obtain enough nourishment. Unfortunately, some tourists with motorcycles and SUVs think it is a good idea to chase them for getting up-close pictures. If this happens regularly, the kyang loose valuable energy and grazing time, which may prove fatal when winter comes and not enough fat reserves have been stored. So please keep your distance when observing these magnificent wild creatures while in Ladakh.

Electrifying Change in Bhutan!

Exciting news from the land of happiness! Bhutan has taken a giant leap towards sustainable transportation by embracing electric taxis! Say goodbye to pollution and hello to a greener future!

Bhutan, known for its commitment to environmental conservation, has yet again set an inspiring example for the world. The introduction of electric taxis is a game-changer, promoting clean mobility and reducing carbon emissions in the breathtaking landscapes of the Himalayan kingdom.

These vibrant electric taxis not only showcase Bhutan's dedication to preserving its pristine environment, but they also reflect the nation's progressive mindset and innovative spirit. By making the switch to electric vehicles, Bhutan is not just transforming its transportation sector but also fostering a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle for its people.

Imagine cruising through the picturesque streets of Thimphu or exploring the stunning valleys of Paro in a whisper-quiet, emission-free taxi. With zero tailpipe emissions, and the fact that all electricity in Bhutan is generated from hydropower, these electric taxis are paving the way for cleaner air, reduced noise pollution, and a healthier Bhutan for generations to come.

From September onwards, all our clients will travel emission-free, at least up to Bumthang and back. For those who will travel to Mongar and Trashigang we’ll still have to use regular cars, as not enough charging points have been installed here. However, this will change for the better quite soon as well.

Come and discover the rich cultural heritage of Ladakh!

Isolation breeds splendour. If there is any place where this holds true, it is Ladakh. Step into a land where ancient traditions thrive amidst the breathtaking beauty of the Trans-Himalayas. Ladakh is dotted with monasteries that hold centuries of history and spirituality. Explore the intricate architecture of Hemis, Thiksey, and Alchi Gompa, monasteries adorned with vibrant murals, brocade-embroidered thankas (prayer rolls) and precious relics.

Let us take you to one of the mesmerising festivals where masked dances and music performances showcase the region's ancient and deeply entrenched Buddhist history. We’ll skip the famous, crowded ones and take you outside the tourist circuit, to Takthok or Shachukhul, or even better, Karsha or Stongde in Zanskar.

The people of Ladakh are as captivating as the landscapes, their customs and rituals a testament to the resilience and plain toughness that was required to survive in one of the highest and driest places on earth. Instrumental to this, was their staunch Buddhist beliefs which gave them a degree of acceptance and perseverance hardly seen anywhere else. And compassion, an essential ingredient for surviving in tiny, close-knit and fully self-reliant communities in the middle of nowhere.

Experience the warm hospitality of Ladakhi locals, who will welcome you with open hearts and minds, and listen to their stories of hardships and caravans crossing the Karakoram to China.

And of course, you should sample the flavours of Ladakhi cuisine, savouring barley-based dishes like momos, thukpa, thintuk, chu-tagi, khambir (Ladakhi bread) and at least one cup of butter tea.

BHUTAN GET'S CHEAPER!

Bhutan has adjusted its tourism rates, allowing travelers to avoid the daily tourist tax if they stay at least five nights.

Last week, Bhutan announced changes to the Sustainable Development Fee (SDF). According to an announcement on the Bhutanese Ministry of Tourism's website, travelers who pay the SDF for the first four days can stay an additional four days without paying the fee.

Similarly, travelers who pay for the first seven days can stay seven days longer without paying for the second week. Travelers who pay for 12 days are exempt from paying for the subsequent 18 days.

This means savings of $600 for tourists staying one week and $1400 for tourists staying two weeks. The changes have gone into effect already and will remain so until the end of 2024, after which the standard SDF will again apply.

Travelers who have already booked a tour to Bhutan with us will also benefit from the new rate reductions. We will revise their invoice.

EXPLORATION OF ASSAM & ARUNACHAL PRADESH – 21-DAY TOUR

On this tour, you will explore a considerable part of Northeast India, namely the states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. You fly from Delhi or Calcutta to Dibrugarh, the easternmost city of India. Here you go back in time and live two days like a tea baron on a tea plantation, staying at a very well-preserved 19th century tea bungalow. Then you’ll cross the majestic Brahmaputra to Majuli Island, known for its Vaishnavite monasteries with their dancing monks.

Arunachal Pradesh is by far the most mountainous state in the Northeast. Its entire northern border, formed by the highest glacier-covered peaks of the eastern Himalayas, is shared with Tibet/China. First, you cross the central part of the state from east to west, staying at altitudes between 1000 and 2000 m. This is the subtropical zone covered by a dense forest of evergreen trees and bamboo.

No less than 26 different tribes live here, each with its own culture, language and history, all with their roots in Southeast Asia or Tibet. Most are originally hunters and gatherers who live off what the forest brings. The sun-moon god Donyi-Polo is more popular here than Jesus, Buddha or Shiva.

Between this tribal area and the Buddhist-inhabited northwest of A.P. lies Nameri National Park, one of the few parks that you can explore on foot. Several kinds of deer, leopards and wild elephants do the same, so be prepared for some exciting encounters.

Driving north over the 4100 m high Sela La pass you reach remote Tawang, situated near the place where India, Bhutan and Tibet (China) meet. It is home to the largest Lamaistic Buddhist ("Tibetan") monastery outside Tibet, many other smaller temples and a population that resembles that of East Bhutan.

Back on the Brahmaputra Floodplain again, you’ll visit world-famous Kaziranga National Park, home to three-quarters of the one-horned Indian rhinos, the world largest herd of wild buffalos, wild elephants and a healthy tiger population. Your exit is from vibrant Guwahati, the capital of Assam.

Best time: November, February & March

LADAKH by ROAD via ZANSKAR

When traveling to Ladakh, flying in is the worst choice you can make. Of course, it is bad for the environment. But probably worse: you are missing the best part.

Because if there is any place within India where getting there is (more than) half the fun, it is Ladakh. As of now, there are five routes, the most popular being the ones via Srinagar and Manali. We have done all of them, many times. Mainly on foot and by car but we’ll take you there on two wheels as well (the ones that require muscle power instead of fuel).

The newest, and most adventurous route is via Zanskar. This isolated Buddhist enclave consists of three high valleys and is confined by the glacier-capped Himalayan Range and the craggy, barren but extremely colorful Zanskar Range. If there is any place in the Himalayas that can lay claim to the title of 'Shangrila,’ it is Zanskar.

The mountains are out of this world and the villages are like Ladakh 30 years ago. Tibetan Buddhist temples, known as gompas, sit on rocky peaks, surrounded by prayer flags and white stupas. The villages are small clusters of uniform fort-like houses made of sun-dried mud bricks and natural stones, straight out of ‘Seven Years in Tibet.’

Zanskar was among the first areas in the Himalayas where Buddhism gained a foothold. This is due to its proximity to Kashmir, which was a Buddhist center at the beginning of the era. Via Zanskar, Buddhism reached Ladakh and eventually Tibet.
Zanskar is teeming with monasteries, chortens, mani walls and petroglyphs. The chorten of Sani probably dates from the 2nd century, making it 900 years older than the famous temple of Alchi. The monasteries of Lingshed, Karsha and Phugtal, although much younger in their present form, are probably founded at the same time.

We’ll take you along Manali and Keylong up to the Shingo La, the main pass that gives access to Zanskar. Then we’ll go slowly, one valley at a time, along Padum, Zanskar unassuming ‘capital’ and numerous small villages to Lamayuru, where the main Kargil-Leh road is reached.

WILDLIFE of ASSAM

Come with us on a wildlife adventure to one of the least visited parts of India, the Northeast. This region is one of the most biodiverse areas in the world. It is part of three so-called biodiversity hotspots and boasts some vast wildlife parks where the Indian big five can still stretch their legs without bumping into roads and human inhabitation. You’ll also experience the 19th century comforts of ancient tea bungalows, stroll through rustic bamboo villages with a small herd of curious kids in tow, and cross the shimmering waters of the mighty Brahmaputra, one of the world’s most untamed great rivers.

You will visit Kaziranga N.P., Manas N.P., Nameri N.P. and Dibru-Saikowa N.P. Here, you will find the last large population of Indian (unicorn) rhinos, a vital tiger population, Asia’s largest population of wild buffalos and large herds of wild elephants. More difficult to see, but equally present, are the clouded leopard and the red panda, species typical of the rainforests of the lower Himalayas.
All of these parks, but especially Kaziranga and Dibru-Saikhowa, are also a birder’s paradise. Even non-bird watchers will be amazed by the wealth of birds here, including many large, and easily observed species, such as the Bengal vulture, Pallas sea eagle, the black-necked stork, pelicans and adjutant storks.
You’ll find a link to the tour in the bio. Or drop us a line at info@jantreksandtravels so we can design your own custom wildlife tour.

“Likhai “is the Kumaoni word for wood carving. This is a traditional craft form that can be seen throughout the state of Uttarakhand but is especially dominant in the Kumaon region.

When traveling through Kumaon, you will encounter houses with white exterior walls and intricately carved window and door woodwork in blue or dark-red hues. These structures are very typical of this region.
The traditional Kumaoni village houses are divided into a lower story for cattle and storage and a higher level where the inhabitants stay. The latter is typically reached by an outside stone staircase leaning against the facade.

Like anywhere else, the traditional architecture is giving way to the all-India ugliness of concrete shoe boxes. But traveling with us, you’ll see and experience traditional villages and village life. Not just from the outside, as we will have you stay at some of these lovely houses-turned-homestays in off-the-road villages.

SHYOK RIVER LODGE IS OPEN

It is great to be at Shyok again. The village is buzzing with activity. Sowing the barley, plowing and irrigation, all done in unison. Everyone helps to work each person’s fields.
The buzz even further increased a few days ago as the rimpoche (head lama) off the Digungpa sect (one of the so-called red-hat sects which has strong presence in the Tibetan border areas) descended upon this little place for a 6-day prayer marathon, together with a following of lamas and international guests.
The whole village trooped straight from the plough to the Gompa (monastery) to cook, clean, eat and pray. Since then, the soothing rhythmic deep-voiced prayers of the lamas echo through the valley.

Trekking, as we've said about a hundred times before, is the most genuine, healthy and non-intrusive way of exploring. Obviously, bicycling, canoeing and horse riding come very close.

You travel by your own Universe-given means of propulsion - your legs - at a speed that comes natural to us. There is nothing between you and the world you are exploring, no car or train window, no helmet or suffocating leather suit.

We have been offering treks in the Himalayas since 1988 and there is no way we are going to stop doing so. As long as there are still unpaved trails to remote villages and breathtaking viewpoints, we'll be helping you to find them.
On our website you'll find anything from tough Himalaya traverses from Spiti to Ladakh to easy 'walks in the park' in Binsar Wildlife Reserve.

TRAVEL TO INDIA HAS BECOME EVEN EASIER

The Government of India today issued new guidelines for International travelers to India. As per these guidelines, no quarantine will be required on arrival in India and there will be no differentiation between the travelers on the basis of “at risk” countries anymore.

Also, International travelers from 82 countries are allowed to upload a certificate of full vaccination instead of a negative RT-PCR report obtained 72 hours prior to boarding.
These countries include those which have an agreement with India on mutual recognition of vaccination certificates of nationally recognized or WHO recognized vaccines or those which provide quarantine-free entry to Indian citizens. The list includes most western countries, the USA and Canada.

INDIA OPENS UP!

Finally....

From 15 November onwards, India will issue tourist visa again to foreign travellers entering by regular flights. Those coming in on chartered flights can avail of visa already since October 15 onwards (don't ask us why).

This is very good news for all those who have been postponing their tours to all the fascinating corners of the Himalayas, and elsewhere in India, with us.

And, as you know, the first 500.000 visa are free!

India and Bhutan soon to open up (?)

With a records of 10 million vaccinations per day, India is pricking up the pace. Almost half of the population is now vaccinated and infection rates have gone down to European levels. So India is considering to open up to foreign tourist soon. When.... we don't know yet.

And, as we have mentioned earlier, the first 500,000 tourists who arrive before 31 March 2022 will receive free visa!

Bhutan is handling (and has been all along) the Covid epidemic extremely well. Already a month ago 90% of the population was double vaccinated. Last week a last batch of Pfizer vaccine arrived, which was needed to vaccinate an as of yet unvaccinated part of the age group 12-18 years. That should happen this week. After that, well-informed sources say, opening up of the country to vaccinated foreign travelers wil most likely be announced, possibly as early as mid-October.

We'll keep you posted!

(Nederlandse versie en link hieronder)

These are difficult times for everyone. But especially for those people who freelance, can't avail of social services or fully depend on tourism. For our guides and drivers in Bhutan, Ladakh, Sikkim, Northeast India and (recently) Uttarakhand all three conditions apply.

As it looks now, they will earn nothing for a year.

Therefore we have set up a fundraiser for them. In case you can still miss a few dollars or euros, these are very welcome, and guaranteed well spent!

You can of course pay online: https://bit.ly/3hjgWxX.

Thank you very much in advance!

(English version and link above)

Beste mensen,
