UNPOPULAR OPINION...
Your surfboard being one litre too big for you isn't the reason you don't surf as well as you want to.
This isn't meant to diminish, this is meant to empower...
If someone can do a roundhouse cutback that radical on a 9ft+ longboard, then your 33l shortboard (that some surf shop 'bro' told you is one litre too big for you) is not what is holding you back and you can work to get there too.
*Side note*
We often get asked if our trips are just for 'shortboarders' or people who want to 'rip'...
The bottom line is that good surfing is good surfing and the fundamentals are exactly the same regardless of your preferred surfboard style.
You can guarantee that one thing Mick Fanning, Torren Martyn and Joel Tudor have in common is a good bottom turn...
Fun waves for Day 1 of our Intermediate Coaching Trip this morning ✌️
TRIP UPDATE 🔥
Days like these 🙏
An entree of cruisy lefts followed by a main course and dessert of long, speedy rights. Minimal crowds and not a breath of wind all day.
We’ve a mix of levels onboard this trip. The user-friendly Maldivian lineups allowed those with more experience to pick off bombs sitting further up the reef, whilst those with less experience sat nearer to the deep-water channel, safely pushing their limits in the bigger conditions - perfect!
We’ve seen huge progression thanks to coach @pepijntigges ✌️ more swell on the way!
We’re midway through a 10-night Central Atolls trip with a group from the Netherlands. Progression has been through the roof thanks to daily coaching from @markboydsurf 🙌
How have the waves been?
In all honesty, we’re struggling to find the words; think of the glassiest, longest, most ripable waves you can, remove the crowd, and you’re probably not far off…
6:00: surf check with the drone.
6:05: a filmed session in speedy lefts without a soul for miles.
7:45: return to boat with breakfast on the table 🙌
A typical morning with @renegadesurf
Oh how we’ve missed this! Coach @markboydsurf cracks 5 to the beach on the first session of our 2022 season 🙌
As of this week, vaccinated travelers will no longer need a negative PCR test to enter The Maldives 🙌
That means less time with a cotton bud up your nose and more time hammering lips ⬆️🏝
@baardskeie wanted to improve his roundhouse cutback on our July 2021 coaching trip, and there’s no doubt he did.
He initially struggled with some ‘counter-rotation’ of the shoulders - where his arms would infact end up going the other way to which they should. Coach @pepijntigges helped fix this, as shown above by his front arm pointing back to the whitewash he’s aiming to hit beautifully.
The most obvious improvement Bard could add to his roundhouse cutty? It’s simple; watch the slow-mo footage at the end of the video. He never actually looks at the section he’s aiming to hit.
If he were to spot this target to aim for he’d benefit from more rotation, and be able to rebound off the foam even better.
Bigger board, more fun?
Surfing 3x a day gives you plenty of opportunities to experiment within your quiver.
Here, @j0hnjac0bsen tries his @almerricksurfboards ‘Black Beauty’ Step-Up in conditions slightly smaller than it was originally designed for.
Judging by the smile on his face, it still goes pretty well!
When it’s on, this wave can be one of the longest in The Maldives 🤤
Join coach @pepijntigges as he carves beautifully on a playful day back in July.
"Absolutely amazing. Saw some of the greatest waves down here in 'the cennies'... Had a fantastic time. Excellent food, excellent company. I suggest everyone jump on."
"Agreed"
